Not really an update, just that I mounted my machined F104 wheel in the back and it looks like it will fit! with a slight fender pull.


Not that it is the most scale correct wheel and tire but it is a different style and I would like to be able to swap styles easily. I see these tires as a nice drag setup, with very narrow front wheels. Or a kind of time attack car with big slicks all around. Of course I still keep the original idea that this will mainly be a rally car a la Simon McKinley and dirt rally style.

Another not su much of an update, I finally trimmed the body approximately. It looks like retroracing will never ever respond and send me my back half like they promised, so that one will have to do. Thrown some wheels and tires for the pics. I should have an actual update tomorrow

I completed the body trimming (front half) and bolted it to the rear half.


Also I made the second bottom link mount, with a much better design. Instead of being awkwardly facing front, they would have been torn on the first rock

How did you know i was looking? I really like the style of the white rim at the front of the car! What is it for? Something 1.9?

Hahaha thanks Lars! The fronts are RC4WD "Landies" wheels, in 1.55" intended for trucks. The wheel apparent diameter is more lime 1.7", 1.55 is the tire bead, because these are used with a bead locking thing inside.

1.7" was still too big scale wise so I put them on the lathe to machined them down to M-chassis wheel size, so I can put tamiya mini tires on (and other aftermarket mini tires). I like how they turned out too! I dont know if you saw that but I have pics of lego tires I want to put on these wheels too. These lego tires are taller and narrower, more like offroad rally escorts.

But I need to put wheels aside for a while I have plenty of choices already "in stock" so I need to concentrate on the serious stuff! Still lots of thoughts I need to make real!

Oh, i see now that 1.9 was a bit ambicious. I think i meant 1.55 I really liked the M-chassis size wheels i had on mine, but i sold my M-chassis so the wheels went with the car. I think normal 1/10-wheels are just a tad too big, like putting 18 inches on a full scale Escort

Yep, concentrate about the more important stuff first, the wheels are "just" the icing on the cake!

Well the wheels are really important for the overall look but I got so many different wheels already (various m chassis tires and wheels, even wide m wheels and front f103 tired that can fit on, etc) that I can swap them while designing the other bits, and make sure all the wheels I really want to use fits. I did the calculation once and regular touring wheels are like 22" wheels lol

Small update!






It did not end up like I wanted but I made the watt's linkage.


First I mounted a screw in the back bearings of the sdi axle, and made a small pivot out of sheetmetal.









Then made the supports, one with brake line and other with aluminum L bar. I also made one of the shock mounts at the chassis.


Problem is I positioned it hanging too low, the taller one would hit the ground before the suspension fully compressed, it does not make sense with the car and ride height (I need to put it like 0.5 / 0.75" higher). But you get the picture, I will do two new brackets, shorter.














I would have liked to do more and complete the shocks mounts but didnt have time. Thats it for now, hope you guys like it! As soon as the rear is sprung i'll move to the front !

I got a back up shell from a buddy, in case the mk2 breaks, or just because, to swap styles I was glad to see it seems to fit pretty well on my chassis!! For those not familiar with this car it is an MK1 ford Escort. I mocked up F104 tires in the rear fender and it looks hot, might have to do a drag setup with the mk1 with these f104 tires abd skinny tires up front.

I should have a real update tomorrow night, but in the meantime I just ordered an extra set of 4 LEGO wheels and tires like the ones I test fitted earlier. I don't want to ruin my LEGO sets


I ordered the wheels too, given they are just the right diameter to look like 13", and a 1:1 scale rim width of 6.5", I might try to machine them and keep only the wheels rings, remove the center, then glue the rings to another set of wheels with hexes.

Here is an update of what I did last night! I was eager to complete the rear before going to bed! :banana: I think the aluminum L pieces for the watts linkage look out of place, I will re-do them later probably in steel tube, but for now they do their job and I can move on.


Good part of the work was to make the axial axles shafts work with the SDI axle. Needed to shorten the shafts and machine the area where the hex go, down to 4mm instead of the stepped pattern. I kept the notch and that's what prevent the shaft from coming out of the axle I also had to grind a bit of the inner axle tubes on the wheel end, to make some space for this notch between the tube and the bearing.


I took some measurements in the process so if someone wants to attempt this you have some guidelines:

Except for what's in my head I don't have new drawings for the front, in fact I used to have Solidworks installed on my work laptop and would use it to design my projects (the 5th scale custom impreza project in the large scale build section) but I have changed laptop since then and I can't find the installation DVD anymore... Also I have less time at hand than I used to have so I spend more time doing and less time drawing, or I end up sketching in my head (I am pretty good at imaging mechanical stuff in my head lol)


My main concern for the front is how to make a connection between how the frame rail ends, and the front section, while having something structurally strong. Oh and I'll make sure to put a strut tower brace too not sure if I'll put the regular one, tied between the two towers, or the stronger V shaped one that ties to the upper firewall area. I think it will help anyways for structure.

Yep...the V shaped one is the way to go I think...!

Be be interesting to see what you come up with...when I was building my MK2 chassis I was toying with the idea of a cross member and track arms like the 1:1. But because of a lack of proper tools and a work area to handle metal work and brass welding, I ended up fabbing up a regular rc IFS front...lol!

I found some thicker piano wire I want to use for the front track arms, can't wait to get there. Still quite some work though before I can do that!

Yes, much more space, I did not think I would have enough suspension travel with those losi mini late shocks but it seems like I have plenty!

Not really an update, but it's been a while since I included the front parts previously made with the newer chassis, so here are some mockups of the parts, held together by magnets. Should give you an "avant goût" of what's to come, I need to make a lower chassis to hold all this strong.










Also I got wider hexes, traxxas, they are the ones I am using in the pics, looks like it's the best option to have full travel in the fenders. I could run more offset but would have to be a stiffer on-road setup.







I also tested the other wheels but I think they are a tad too big for an authentic classic mk2 escort look, it looks more like a modern setup:
