Default RE: New project - by Lunchboxer..

Put all the electronics on tonight (borrowed the ESC from my Willy) and run it... It uses the RS540 Sport Tune w/ the optional high speed gearset.. ouch.. the motor gets REALLY HOT.. It handles really well.. probably doesn't turn as quickly as the touring car (longer wheelbase..) but it is hard to tell without running them side by side.. but I think I need to remove the motor guard and cut a slot in the chassis (bottom) so I can put a heat sink on the motor... (possibly w/ fan)

Yeah, F-1 chassis (F201) has its limitation because it tries to look so scale.. so there's a lot of packaging issue.. for example, hard to install a heatsink!!! Time to bust out the Dremel and machine a slot....

And order up a Tamiya aluminum motor guard..

It looks great, though.. check it out..

The motor was so hot even with the optional aluminum motor mount!! I am going to ditch this plastic motor cover / chassis brace in favor of the optional aluminum one... small, easier for me to fit the heatsink there...

Without the motor guard / chassis brace......

Looks like this project is not over yet.. I won't stop until I mount a cooling fan / heatsink on this motor!! :P

Dremel a channel into the chassis (underneath the motor) so the heatsink can fit in.. I put the black heatsink that came w/ the TB-02 on it as it is wider than the nice looking blue one.. also thought black fit in better in the F-1..

Ordered another LRP fan / power capacitor kit cause I was so impressed with the fan.. will try to mount it in a way to blow air into those heatsink fins.. hopefully keep the motor temperature in check..

Another angle..

Now I am waiting for the Tamiya hop-up aluminum motor guard.. probably need to modify it to clear the heatsink.. argh..

I guess it is kind of cool.. customize your R/C!

Ran a pack with the new setup (heatsink on the motor).. wow, what a difference the heatsink made! It is no longer burning hot.. it is pretty warm after a pack of full throttle, but it does not burn your finger.. nice! Should be even cooler after a fan is added..

I guess that's the "problem" w/ running the optional high speed gearset.. it is pretty quick for sure.. but the acceleration suffers and motor heats up.. oh well...

Oh, stock tires suck... after just 2 packs.. the front is pretty worn.. geez... time for some new tires...

Yeah.. was thinking about it.. might just do that when I am tired of the crazy brushless Lunchbox.. :P

Need to swap the gear back to the stock higher ratio one, then put the Neo in it to see what it can do..

The tires will be trashed in 1 pack, no doubt..

This was probably one of the reasons (other than the high speed gear set) that the motor went super hot last night..

Looks like a stone got caught inside of the deep dish rear wheel.. check out the damage it did to the wheel.. (surprised at how strong the car is.. it was going without slowing down with the stone grinding the rim?!?!)

Anyway, heatsink on the motor is general goodness anyway, so it is not like it is effort wasted...

Will still put a fan on it.. the kit should come in a few days.. !

Stock tires = no good...

This is what the front tires look like after 3 runs.. (it used to have 3 groves...)

Yeah, now it looks like a slick... LOL!! I guess it is time to shop for new tires!

It is kind of cool to see the clear body mounted and you can see the inboard suspension system..

As you can see, there's plenty of room behind the battery / next to the motor to mount the fan that I wanted.. just need to fab up a bracket to hold the fan.. and let the fan below into / through the heatsink..

Also dialed in some toe-in on the back.. factory Tamiya driver uses 2 degree toe in.. I don't have a gauge, but I figure that's close enough.. (esp. I don't have turnbuckles on it, so I can only make one full turn adjustment..)

Hmm... fan will go in that space... and blow into the heatsink at an angle...

Man those tires wore fast. Are there any other tires you can get that have a harder compound than the stock tires?

I will get some Tamiya reinforced Type B (harder compound) tires soon......

Will also add a Novak mega capacitor to the ESC (9200uF) to enhanced the performance and lower the ESC temp, although it never gets hot.. as the motor is a very tame RS540 Sport Tune only..

I might put some cheap 13T motor in it just for fun..... then the capacitor would help..
