This is a great thread. I am looking at an M series chassis for my wife. It looks like the M03 and M05 are front wheel and the M04 is real wheel. I would be interested in putting in a 12T - 15T BL system with NiMh batteries...nothing too fast or powerful, just something "peppy". I have never owned a front wheel drive RC vehicle. What is the difference in terms of speed/power vs handling on these?

I wouldnt bother with a brushless system, they can be a little too much for them. Jus get a Tamiya RZ motor and use the stock TEU-101bk ESC with a 2 cell lipo.If you puttoo much speed into the M-04 (rear whee drive) it looses control easily. As it is only RWD, that means it is only rear wheel braking. so when you brake hard, it spins out.

That said though, The RWD will be faster with the same set up, there will be less wheel spin.

Its a hard choce but id probably say go for the M-05

Well I was looking at the TRF shocks. they seem to be the best ones. But they're also around $40-$50. So not just yet.

Wow...that's a lot of upgrades without hitting the suspension. I like the YeahRacing 55mm dampers I put on the rear of my M04L, but they didn't fit the smaller fronts so well. Anyone had any luck with an upgrade to to just the fronts? They bear so little weight I'm not sure if its even needed.

BTW, I got my M04 sorted with the Yeah Racing 12T Brushless combo after some odd servo issues (replaced standard Futaba with more robust HiTec with metal gears, etc.). It is silly fast now on 2S lipo. Andy, what batteries are you using? I had a hell of a time finding ones that would fit the M04 battery compartment, finally settling on some Yeah Racing 3200mah that are made to fit. Even they seem just a hair long, though.

I use these:

Fairly el-cheapo but they have done well. Had them for a while now and they haven't given me any trouble. Plus they fit with plenty of room to spare. I even use them in my 1/18 stadium truck sometimes.

Here is my finished Beetle...I just converted it "back" to what it should have been all along. This was only my second paint job, so I'm really happy with how it came out (I learned a lot the hard way on the first). First pics are stock wheels/tires, then with HPI Vintage 5-spokes, 26mm up front, 31mm in rear. I like the look/stance this gives the kit, and the added traction in the rear is helpful with the brushless setup. I think my next iteration may be the Alpine A110 rally body...

Thank you. The metallic red/garnet came our really well...the lo-res pictures really don't do it justice. I may have to get another shell for bashing!

We must have similar taste as I got the exact same HPI wheels/tyres for my beetle. Don't drive it with them on though, they cause the m04 to traction roll super easily. Even the slightest steering input will flip it. Especially with the brushless. It's a shame, because they compliment the body so well! Well done mate, looks awesome! I don't even use my beetle body anymore, it's just a shelf queen!

I've driven it lightly with the HPIs on there because that set is not glued yet. I do, however drive my stretched project M04-XL General Lee with the same HPI setup, and I learned the hard way about that vicious traction roll from RWD, especially with the heavier toy-based plastic body I have. With a standard lexan body, it's manageable, but it's definitely still there if I'm not careful.

Here is my M05 Mini, she is a racer firstly and then I can swap her back to shelf queen with a different bodyshell. It's fitted with 3 racing shocks/gears/bearings/bumper/steering/,alloy wheel hexes, servo, HPI Saturn20 motor, brand new tamiya wheels and tyres.
I've got a Mtronics Viper 20 ESC and Spektrum DX3 radio set to fit to it, and also the original Tamiya silver wheels and green bodyshell. Picked this up on eBay. Initial pictures of her in race mode and I will put the shelf queen pictures up later.
