Default New FMS Custer Channel Wing CCW-5

Hello all,

I was inspired to make this model while researching circular wing
designs on the web and discovering the Custer Channel Wing. I'm sure
you'll agree that the design looks a bit different with the large U-shaped
channels in the wing. These channels provide a lot of extra lift caused
by the propeller's pulling air over the airfoil and creating lift below the
channel. The CCW creates 2 to 3 times the lift of a typical flat wing and
provides very short take-off and landing (VSTOL) capabilities and even
vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) if the wind is just right.

Click this link to download the [link=http://gunnerson.homestead.com/files/Custer-CCW-5.zip]Custer-CCW-5.zip[/link] FMS model.

Some great web sites for CCW information are at:

And a contemporary [link=http://library-dspace.larc.nasa.gov/dspace/jsp/bitstream/2002/13456/1/NASA-aiaa-2002-2929.pdf]NASA document[/link].

To model the CCW-5 in FMS I used some photos I found on the web
and tried my best to create a 3D model that looked close to the CCW-5.
I borrowed some 3D model parts from George Gerdes' Piaggio P180 Avanti
model as it is already set up in a twin-engine pusher configuration. Instead
of modifying the airfoil lift, drag and moment coefficients in the POLAR section
of the FMS .par file, I added 2 additional MOTORs underneath the channels
pushing air downwards. Accordingly, the CCW-5 pitches nose down when full
throttle is applied as indicated in the real CCW-5 documents.

If you find additional information regarding any flying CCW designs, please
send me an email with any new information.

Default RE: New FMS Custer Channel Wing CCW-5

How is your progress on the construction of the channel wing model. More than amazing this craft. I have only known about the channel wing for about six years. I didn't think much about it until I became interested in slow to very slow flying aircraft. I also am now considering building a radio controlled model of this aircraft.
