converting 30% nitro
Hello all,
I have a few cases of Powermaster 30% Nitro, 23% all synthetic Helicopter glow fuel.
I wanted to convert it to 15% nitro, 18% oil (including 3% castor oil) and
5% Nitro, 18% oil by just adding Methonal and castor oil.
How would I figure the math for that. Metric is fine too......
Thanks guys...

1 liter/1000ml;
30% Nitro = 300ml
23% Oil = 230ml
47% Met = 470ml
Then go by the ingredient you don´t want to add, as in this case Nitro.
When changing from 30% to 15% nitro, that´s half the amount so the end result should be twice what you started with.
1 liter to 2 liter;
2000 * 0,15=300ml Nitro (the same as you started with)
2000 * 0,18=360ml Oil (360-230=130ml should be added, 100/2000*130=6,5% will be castor)
2000 * 0,67=1340ml Methanol (1340-470=870ml should be added)
1 gallon 30/23 to 5/18
3785ml is;
3785 * 0,3=1135,5ml Nitro
3785 * 0,23=870,55ml Oil
3785 * 0,47=1778,95ml Methanol
Changing from 30% to 5% is 1/6 of what you started with, so it should be 1 gallon * 6 (3785*6=22710ml 22,71liter)
22710 * 0,18=4087,8ml Oil (4087,8-870,55=3217,25ml should be added, 100/22710*3217,25=14,16% will be castor)
22710 * 0,77=17486,7ml Methanol (17486,7-1778,95=15707,75ml, so 15,7 liter should be added)
I´m not the best at explaining things, so I hope I didn't make things worse...

RE: converting 30% nitro
Excellent post by nitrovein. "Give a man a fish and you've fed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for life." Having said that, I put together an Excel spread sheet some years ago to do the same calculation autmatically. You enter what you have to start with, and what you want to end up with, and it tells you what to add to the original gallon you started with. In your case, to get from a gallon of 30% N, 23% O to 15% N, 15% O, 3% castor, to the original gallon add 9 oz of oil, 8 oz castor, and 111 oz of meth. You'll end up with 2 galons. To get to 5% nitro, 15% O, 3% castor, to the original gallon add 86 oz O, 23 oz castor, and 531 oz meth. You'll end up with 6 gallons. If you have MS Excel on your computer and would like a copy of the spreadsheet, I can email it to you.

RE: converting 30% nitro
Yes. That would be great. Thank both of you. I just checked and I have 12 gallons of 30% helicopter fuel that I want to use. I gave up helicopters years ago and had all this fuel that I got at the WRAM when power master used to attend. Seemed a waste not to use it in my planes.
Are you sure about the 11 oz of methanol for the 15%? It seems kinda low.

I know this is an extremely old thread but I was just checking the math and noticed a mistake in the castor oil quantity. If you only want 3% of the total 18% to be castor then the amounts you will need to add are 111.4 oz. Methanol, 15.3 oz. Synthetic oil, and 1.4 oz. castor to get a 15% nitro/18% total oil (97%s /3%c) IF you just want to add methanol and castor then add the syn and castor volumes together and you will get 18% total oil at (62% synthetic/38% castor)
For the 5%/18% then you need to add 531 oz methanol, 104.7 oz synthetic, and 4.1 oz castor. That is for the same 18% total oil (97% syn / 3% castor) If you want to just add Methanol and castor, then just add the synthetic and castor quantities together to get the total oil to add. you would then still have 18% total oil ( 21% synthetic/79% castor)
I am sorry for resurrecting an old post and I don't know why I went and checked the math, I must just be weird.

Hi, I recently ran into the need to calculate fuel mixes. I can e-mail an Excel file in which you can enter the Quantity, % Nitro, and % Oil of the fuels (Components) you may have on hand and play with those numbers (the quantities of each) until the result you want is displayed on the right side as "Mixture".
There are two (2) sheets. The second sheet, labeled "COMPLEX" (not shown), goes even further and allows you to mix up to thirteen "component" fuels to get a final result. The results, however, are "sub-totaled" along the right side and that Mixture is automatically utilized as one of the components in the next iteration.
I usually only use the sheet labeled "SIMPLE".
As long as the units of measure you're using (i.e., cups, ounces, gallons, milliliters, etc.) are the same, then the resultant ratio is along the bottom and what you end up with is along the right side.
Hope someone can use this.
Adios.

Hi. Due to my ineptness, I could not figure out how to attach the file...kept getting incompatible attachment error messages from the forum. I am travelling for a few days but if you were to send your request to my email I would be happy to. My email is: [email protected]. in the subject just put something like; "Fuel Mixing Spreadsheet Request"
