2nd 1/5 scale - Another 5B/T or Redcat Rampage MT v3?
I am going to pick up a second 1/5 scale, my budget is around $600. I found an unbuilt 5B SS kit that I can get for $600 but honestly, I think I would like to play with another platform. The latest iteration of the v3 Redcat MT seems to be pretty solid and it seems to have decent parts support.
Personally, I think the HPI Baja 1/5 platform is THE 1/5 off road platform to have but after that, I would like to try a 4x4 truck type platform on a $600 budget. The higher end 1/5 scale is out of the question before anyone suggests those platforms.
So, would you get another HPI Baja 5B SS or get a Redcat Rampage MT v3?

i cant speak to the redcat quality, but i have seen one run 1st hand on a small track along with my KM baja. that redcat, being 4wd handled WAY better than my baja.
but 4wd does mean more parts that can fail/break. but still, it ran soo strong and fast on the track!

Honestly, once you drive a 4wd gasser you'll have a big smile on your face, forget the BS that 2wd are more fun cos they're more demanding to drive, I've had both and totally disagree with that line, oops here comes the hornets nest. For 1 bashing 4wd opens up way more useable terrain and 2 on the track it requires just as much input and concentration to get round fast, and that'll be faster than your 5b/5t.
The thing is 2wd gassers were all we had really up until 2-3 yrs ago or so, bar MCD who were extortionately expensive (roller to boot) and who were the really the only player in 4wd. FG were king of the 2wd mainly due to Europe where it all started (they've sold a gazillion units since they started 25yrs ago and are by far the biggest 1/5 scale seller on the planet) and then came the HPIbaja...hugely popular in N. America due to HPI's dealer/LHS network but designed when 2wd was still the norm.
The Chinese manufacturers, starting with the FS MCD clone started the mainstream 4wd market making it affordable, they've sold more units globally than the HPI 5B/T, and then 4wd balloned with Chinese manufacturers producing affordable 4wd cars. now we have MCD, Smartech/nutech, FS/CEN (admittedly MCD clones), SY, kaylee, FG, lauterbacher, hurrax, ferox (coming soon), redcat/HSP and kamitiro(not many of these around) .
i remember many many moons ago my mardave marder nitro...2wd, basic as it gets running a irvine .25 plane motor..it was the bomb back then until kyosho bought out the 4wd turbo burns buggy...rest is history 4wd exploded in the nitro world...4wd nitros sell 100 to 1 to 2wd.
So after all that rambling what I'm saying is for offroad, IMO of course, 4wd is the dogs bollocks..yep 2wd is fun but 4wd is more fun, for $600 the rampage is probably your best buy right now as far as durabilty, support and fun factor....still got mine after 2 yrs...i still like my pig but maybe hold out for the new XT5 from redcat...looks promising and still in your $600 budget

4WD all of the way, now that we (buzzard and I) found an area that we call a "track" the difference in performance is huge! My T's tail will give out completely if I dont hit the curve just right, but my Nutech Sand Storm powers through and is easliy corrected during slides. Dont get me wrong I LOVE my T but would never buy another 2wd system again.

I have always said 2wd is for onroad. You rarely see a 2wd off road vehicle in real life because its a bad idea.
Only time you see Rwd is on an extremely lightweight buggy/sandrail. Thats it.

Well, I am trying to get the best deal I can on a Redcat Rampage MT right now. There are a few sellers, I just need to see who has one in stock and for the best price.
Thanks for all of the input!

Ok, it's ordered! I went with the Black body with green flames, got the tuned pipe and free shipping for $649 AND I will hopefully have it for the weekend for our upcoming bash.

make sure you do the pre-run checklist or your upcoming bash might be a bit short the list is a sticky on RRF. and take a spare th/br servo, the dual steering ones should hold up for a bit longer but the th/br servo belongs in the garbage, mine found a nice home there before i even ran it, the same can be said for most of the rtr's that are coming from China. both the servos in my nutech also took up residence in my trash can the day it arrived[sm=50_50.gif]

Shipping confirmed. Truck should land on Wednesday or Thursday! If anyone else is interested, I would get one soon. It sounds like these are going to be backordered pretty soon.

Are there any inherent problems with these besides the servos? I'm looking into getting something like this with 4 wheel drive. Just not sure what though. Leaning towards a Nutech but not sure which one. Maybe one of these. Let us know how it turns out Dale Grible.

I hope that its a good model and I can give glowing reviews on it so I can convince some of you chuckleheads to buy them and we can help strengthen the platform and increase aftermarket support. I will be honest though, if it's a turd, I will say its a turd.

The V3 Rampages are leaps and bounds better than the v1-v2s. They have made several improvements over the course of the Rampage life span. Definitely checkout www.redcatrampageforum.com like Moo says, there is lots of valuable information on hand. If you have any questions or issues feel free to PM me there and I will do my best to help you out.
