I've done it both ways. I think the gasket sealant is recommended, but I've also not used it and didn't have any problems with air leaks. So you could try it without first, see if it runs good, and seal it up if it doesn't.

Spary two thin coats on each side and then assemble before it's completely cured. Works great.

ive used the new DDM steel gasket and man they are super sealing , just put them on dry no sealants and they work excellent , if only DDM put that coating from the steel gaskets onto the copper gaskets they would be the ultimate gasket on the market but tell them that
