Hello guys.

I'm new to this forum, and I would like to hear some ideas from you all.

I've build a giant scale car, but I'm having some problems with the motor clutch actuating too early.



This is how it's being built.

This is a standard weedeater clutch. The gear is 1:6 ratio.

Replacing the clutch spring would help to delay a little bit more to actuate?

What a Frankenstein!!

IMO, without replacing the entire clutch to some aftermarket item, going to a heavier spring is the only way to change when the clutch engages. The softer the spring the earlier the clutch engages.

Its if its possible to lighten the clutch shoes it should also change when it engages. The less weight the shoe has the more RPM it needs to move.

Love to see a video of this thing in action!

Yeah, it is a real frankenstein. I'm currently finishing it, but as soon as I can I'll post a video.

I'll give a try on that. the clutch shoe still new. I can lighten it a lot. Thanks for the tip.

This is what home building is all about.
Reminds me a lot of my earlier projects.


As you're running such big wheels you could probably reduce the gearing a bit further to 8:1 or even more.
I've tried putting RC clutch springs on these sort of motors and a 6000RPM spring was way too stiff.
It only JUST engaged and the car crawled along at full revs.

If you lighten the shoes make sure you take the exact same amount off.
Drilling holes of the same size would be the best way.





Also I would like to see more photos of how you've mounted the engine.
Once it drives there's a lot of stress on the mounts and you don't want it to come loose....

Yes, I think I'll have to increase the gearing as you said, but first I'll try with the clutch ideas. Lets see what happens

Errm, about the steering... How many kilos a servo motor is needed? I have not tested yet, would a 17kg servo work?


I'll take more pictures this weekend, as I'm doing it on my father's house.

It might work, but if you get a Hitec HS-805 MG i think this will be sufficient. This is 24,7 kg on 6 volt. Reasonably priced too

I like your build! I wish i could make mine this "uncomplicated" too, hehe! Will be nice to see more of it.

I'm thinking in dual servos. My radio supports channel mixing, so I can setup it to control 2 servos at the same time.

I'm using a turnigy-1501 servo, it is 17 kilos on 6 volts.

At home I'll post some new pictures.

Why use channel mixing, when all you have to do is to run an Y-cable and control the servos on one channel?

My radio has 6 channels, and I dont know if a split would work fine. I've read some posts people claiming that it will overheat the servo. I'm not sure about it

Ah, the clutch is fine, I will not need to change the spring. I found out that the carb was dirty and the engine was very weak. That was the problem. LOL

A 17KG servo might steer that car if you run it on a smooth surface, but I would get a bigger one just to be sure.

Hey guys, a little update here!

Got my new servo motor, it's a 24kg model made by blue-bird. Looks pretty good.

Tomorrow I'm going to install it. It's the only missing part. I'm very excited to see the car in action!

Wonder if you could use a GoPed GSR40 clutch on that. Do the clutch shoes mount on the flywheel on that motor?

Yes, the shoes are mounted on the flywheel
