IMO, I wouldn't buy used unless you are familiar with the platform, otherwise you will spend most of your time on forums asking for help once you break something. So that being said, there is Redcat, Turnigy, KM, Rovan, and Nutech that cost around or are less than $700. Also, were you looking for off-road or on-road, 2WD or 4WD?

hobbyking sells the thunderbolt V1 for $300 RX-ready with turnigy's name on it. smartech must have liquidated the last of em' word is that most all nutech parts fit the smartech, but the smartech has a weaker engine and the diffs aren't as good.

for the 400 you save buying a tb1 you're way better off buying the nutech tb2 or tb3...you will swallow up the 400 in milliseconds on buying the tb1...

got it today, fired up in three pulls, thing is SWEET!

every tank it becomes more and more powerful, yeah the low end bog is there, yeah, the center diff is useless but hey for $300 I could not be more pleased.

honestly I think with a X-can muffler (which i'm getting soon) it should be powerful enough for most needs, and maybe get the new viscus center from the TB2.

these things should be called "pre-assembled" because all the linkages had to be adjusted, but I removed essentially everything to see how she ticks and am pleased to find that nothing was loose and nothing was stripped, so thats a plus.

with a basher you don't need the best of the best to have fun! in fact you don't even need the best to be competitive on a track either!

Are they that cheap for the wrong reasons?

Stay the FAR away from that hobbyking big monster truck. THOSE ARE GARBAGE
The only good thing about those trucks are the engines, and those put out decent power. Youll have to do a ton of work before you even thinking about pulling the cord.
Somewhere in the Giant Scale Cars section there is a trend on that very truck and I went thru a good amount of the issues I had with it such as:

1. An AMAZING amount of stripped screw while trying to tare the truck down
2. Having to tare down 90% of the truck just to correct the belt situation (installed incorrectly from the factory)
3. Having to cut a HUGE hole in the front diff box so the belt would stop rubbing it (SO THE WHEELS COULD MOVE)
4. Horrifically bad steering servos
5. One of the tires was made so badly, you could touch the side wall and it would rip apart

Simply put, it may be cheap, but its one of the worst purchases you'll make. Then have fun trying to resale it [:@]

Default RE: Buying 1/5 for under $700?

this is the one I got. In the 2nd pic u can see I converted it to 4 motors, but that dident last long. I found it keept flicking the circuit breaker and the wires were getting way to hot. and it was to hard for the kids to turn when driving. So now its back to just 2 motors

imagine it with 4 link suspension and some pneumatic wheels....
