Default G290RC clutch issues

We're new to 1/5 scale.
Had a race last weekend with our Losi 5ive-B and this is the result. I'm pretty the shoes were not moving very free on the bolts and were about 1mm low. You can see the lip on the shoe. 8k spring, stock shoes.
I've assembled the new setup a couple times without the spring just so I can see how things move. My question is: is it okay to use 2 bottom flat washers to shim the shoes up into the bell more? Does anyone see any other issues in the photos? I have a new clutch bell and bearings coming.
For the record, the boy did awesome! 2nd through most of his Main, messed up a corner and finished third.

worn out shoe.

1 flat washer under. Bevel washer on top. New shoe.

worn bell.
