RE: Aluminium gear carrier
Are you worried about stripping the diff gears?
I thought the plastic spur had to be the weak point?
I already have the the steel pinion but not the spur.Is this from FG?

RE: Aluminium gear carrier
My carrier for a diff ring was rubbish, agreat idea but it worked too well and the engine kept moving when the clutch engaged.
I'm working on a new one that fits onto an ordinary alloy 60mm carrier still acomodates the rubbers and still lets you use a diff gear as a spur. with this arrangement that initial kick is taken up with the rubbers and the engine stays where it should.(hopefully)

Koria are you running with the plastic or the alloy engine mounts? If your mounts are plastic do you think alloy mounts would stop the engine moving as you would be able to tighten them more effectively?

Yes I did consider that as they are plastic at the moment, but all that force would then be transfered down to the dog bones which would i think be the next weakest point. then I would have to swap those for ball drive then the weakest point would maybe be the axle cups I've seen those split with normal gears [X(].

RE: Aluminium gear carrier
dont know, lauterbacher make one as well theres is well cool just a 4 arm cross shape with a hole at each end for the gear. Maybe they see a market and just dont care, athough I doubt it. I read on one website selling it that it was not recomended for hardcore driving (which surely is the point of owning a monster) maybe they found the engine moving a problem as well.

I agree, you need something to absorb the shock in the gear train I'm thinking that FG designed it that way for a reason. If you work something out I'd love to see some pics.
I am in the middle of setting up my workshop. when done I'll have a go at turning something up myself. Maybe some sort of clutch slipping device??

agreed shock absorbtion is good, we do not have any more of a issue of the motor spreading with the adapter in place. and we have not seen any issue with the drive line, I have split a ball drive but that was onroad were traction becomes extreme.

RE: Aluminium gear carrier
i had a gallon and a half on the plastic gear carrier that i modified to hold the diffgear. it took 30+ foot jumps, landing on asphalt, and i'm sure i had to be 7 to 8 foot high.
it finally failed when it started sliding off the shaft. the shaft slide inward and the brake disk dropped of it's hub. so what did i do i slide the brake hub over when i should have realigned the spur carrier.
but i got a good dozen of those jumps before it broke. i have the large aluminum motor mount. at the end of the day all the engine mount screws needed tightening minus one screw lost.

I've never managed to have loose engine screws and retain a mesh between the diff and layshft gear, once the engine is loose, the ali plate on top comes loose and then its game over crunchy style.

RE: Aluminium gear carrier
i've had my fair share of the layshaft gear and diff gear crunching. i made a custom top plate so the large motor mount couldn't pull the gears away from each other
