Chrome Plating Samba?
I'm in the process of finding someone to chrome plate my Samba off-road pipe. Has anyone had this done? If so where did you have the work done or does anyone know who would be able to chrome plate a R/C muffler? Any pic's or info would be nice. Thanks.

Chrome may chip off easily, holds in heat, and may become discolored if the right kind of chrome is not used. You may want to consider having it machine polished to get the bling you are looking for.

a_vdk....I don't see how having the muffler plated will hold in heat. As far as getting it polished, I think someone on this forum has tried that with little success.

hellya....Nice pipe but I'm not looking to get another pipe. I like the Samba very much so. Just looking to put a personal touch to it. Alittle bling to it. That's all.

Also, after polishing, clean thoroughly, and give it a layer of Polymer based laquer sealant.
It should protect against oxidizing, but I don't know how much heat it can stand.

I'll try to post some pictures later, but I took my Samba to AirBorn Coatings and had it HPC coated. HPC stands for High Performance Ceramic coating. This stuff helps dissipate heat and is supposed to provide a smooth internal surface for better flow capability on tube headers for full-size cars. Of course you can't get the same the result on the inside of an RC pipe because of the cones and baffles, etc.. Any local shop in your area that does powder coating should be able to do HPC coating or point you to a place that does.
When I post the pictures, you'll see that it gives the pipe a nice "aluminum" sheen. The best part is that it only costs $40.

CowboyBob....Thanks for the info. I know of a local place that does plating but haven't heard very good feedback about them. I'll check on the powder coating. It will be nice to see your pic's of your samba pipe.

Yea, powdercoating is the way to go. There is special high heat powdercoat and you can get it in chrome with a clear coat. Works very well.

RC Feen, you can also consider contacting [link=http://www.jet-hot.com/index.html]Jet Hot[/link]. They do car headers, but I'm not sure if they'll do a small pipe.

RE: Chrome Plating Samba?
We have a local shop that does the triple chrome plating. We have had very good luck with there chrome. It holds up very well to heat. I had the same shop chrome the headers on my car and it held up! Here is a pic of a chrome exhaust can on a g260rc. Any local shop near you should be able to plate the pipe or can for you.

I sent and email to Jet-Hot for a price quote. Looking at about $40 to have the JET-HOT Sterling done on the samba pipe. I'm still checking on one of the local plating shops to have the pipr chromed. We'll see and I'll post some pic's once it's done.
Oneill Brothers Racing...how much did your local shop charge for the triple chrome on the can? I just want to get an idea of the price ranges.

RE: Chrome Plating Samba?
If you going to have your pipe chromed make sure it is triple chrome plated. We had some cans done with cheap chrome and it peeled off and discolored. The triple chrome seems to hold up very well to the heat. Or you can look into ceramic coating. It is more exspensive but holds up better then chrome.

RE: Chrome Plating Samba?
OBR....thanks for the tip! Right now I'm planning on sending the pipe to Jet-Hot to have the Jet-Hot Sterling process done on the pipe and manifold. The Jet-Hot Sterling process is a ceramic coating which will be more durable for the pipe and gives it the "the brilliance of chrome with the subtlety of nickel" quoted by Jet-Hot. I'll be posting pic's before and after.

a_vdk.....$67 to have the pipe done with the Jet-Hot Sterling process. I will be sending it to MS to be done. I have some buddies that have been out in Tempe AZ for work that have had some work done at the Tempe shop and they were real pleased with the out come.

RE: Chrome Plating Samba?
I got the Samba pipe and manifold back today from Jet-Hot in MS. Very happy with the results and the finish. Will be installing it this weekend. For $55 bucks I'm glad I did it. Take a look.
