In need of new diff??
Very bad grinding noise at take off and while driving today.
I have new spur and pinion gears.
Its a XTM and I know the FG diff will work, would I be better off with the stock or alluminum case?
Dont even want to think if the price of the visco diff.
What are the opinions on this..new case only or just new gears inside??

RE: In need of new diff??
I would say that if you are replacing the diff. gears, you probably should replace the diff. tube as well...the aluminum one is a piece of junk. The steel tube will not necessarily save your gears, but it will give you much more protection against damage from external sources, like rocks.
You may want to consider using a really viscous differential grease, so the gears will have some lubrication...it will improve your traction, too.
Consider trying this stuff...it is what I use (you will need two containers):

RE: In need of new diff??
make sure its the diff first, i once thot my diff was shot, but it turnd out to be the layshaft gear not matchn up w/the other gear {it loosened up and wasnt lining up w/other gear} so that caused a grinding noise.

RE: In need of new diff??
When ever there is a problem remember to ask a doctor, In this case the Scull Doctor...
Dude my diff is fine it was the motor mounts that were loose and made the diff gears nibble on one another instead of meshing.
Now I have a smooth and happy buggy again. Thanks to all....Lets go bash.......

RE: In need of new diff??
teamchrome: You should consider upgrading the diff, but "just" the diff casing. The plastic one is not very good, and could cost you the internal gears... I have changed to FG # 8484 on both my FG's.
It comes with the bearings on either side of the diff case. They are a different size than if using the plastic casing, so someone actually thought twice here (HEHE) All you need is to transfer the internal gears to the new unit and apply some diff lock grease/oil. I have some approx. 250000wt silicone oil in ny diff. Gives some locking effect. Another benefit of the alu conversion kit is that the diff is sealed and grease/oil will not cover everything efter a short while.... O-ring sealed.

RE: In need of new diff??
Well i have a MB and a MT.My MT s diff never blew up yet and my MB is eating diffs is there a reason? They both have 120,000 diff oil and i sealed them with high temp red gasket so nothing leaks. They are both stock diffs and thinking on replacing with the alloy version at least on the MB.
Its always the plugable diff gears the are eaten[]Getting fed up

RE: In need of new diff??
how much is the alloy conversion ? My spur gear seems to be locked right now (possible rocks jamed in my gears) but my diff seems to working so in the process of taking my stuff apart i may consider the alloy conversion if it isn't priced unfairly.
thanks

RE: In need of new diff??
I know this question has been asked a dozen or so times before, but where can I get the metal spur and pinion for the XTM or Firehammer, and how much??
I dont want to do a complete change over to reto fit the FG parts to the XTM.
Does anyone make them for the XTM or Firehammer? If so where and how $$..
Im ordering the alluminum diff...

RE: In need of new diff??
question- I will be installing the 8484 and have a question. I really don't race so what should I use, diff grease or diff oil. Also, how much do you use when you put back together? I have never messed with differentials so this is new to me.
Thanks

RE: In need of new diff??
Good choice in getting the 8484 conversion kit. (Assuming your internal gears are OK).
I would definately put the absolutely stickiest oil in there you can get. FG has som small bottles (enough for one filling). In order to work you would fill it at least 95% up. It will not expand and thereby ruin the diff, but you would also want to have enough to get a blocking effect.
When using grease the idea is to lubricate the gears. So a fully filled diff is not needed. But too little grease is not good either because it gets "thrown off" the gears when spinning, so it is of little use if sitting on the diffcasing only...
Before i upgraded my diff to the 8484 set I put tome 75% full of grease. The gears always had some grease to "eat".
The 8484 set also completely seals the diff so no oil are coming out btw. the casing and the ring you put over. Especially if you get the ring from the locking diffs. I got that for my touringcar (will NOT fit MB/MT). Better quality and cheap.
I hope this information is usefull to you.

Since your getting a new rear end, I would hate to see you go all steel, if you bind up then you would either blow your engine or your rear end.
http://www.rc-car-online.de/htstarteng.htm they make a 17, 18, 19, & 20 tooth steel pinion that is to be used with the 48 tooth spur.
These pinions fit the Firehammer, XTM, Carson, Traveller, ect and this company also make a steel spur if your really want it.

If you, or Charlie,(Northwest Nitro) could get ahold of these it would really help.. Know of anyone local?
