Pull start rope broken
Hi All,
I searched the forums for an hour and couldn't find any decent instructions on how to fix a pull start. My rope broke at the knot on the inside of the pull start. I pulled it off and got the rope tied off again on the inside. Then I think I screwed myself. I turned the pulley assembly to retract the cord back into the starter but that wound the spring in the wrong direction I guess.
I then loosened the screw on the center of the assembly to try and figure out what I had done and now it seems completely hosed up. I'd like to try and learn how to repair this pull start so I know how to handle this in the future.
I can buy a new pull start but then I learn nothing except how to turn four screws to mount the new starter. I also have to wait a week to run my car again.
If there is a detailed thread on the large-scale forum on how to do this repair that I missed in my search, forgive this inquiry and point me to it. If there is an article on the web somewhere on how to fix a CY, Zenoah, SIKK pull start I would appreciate a pointer there as well. If we need to start a new thread here about how to repair a broken cord on a pull start and how to disassemble an entire pull-start to fix one, then that would be great too.
I know we have some excellent experience on this forum on these engines and look forward to learning the all about how to fix/rebuild a pull start.
Thank you,
Ken

RE: Pull start rope broken
normally there easy to fix- unless the spring comes out then there a pain to put back together - last time mine snapped i took it to the local tool hire place they added new cord and set it back up for £2

Ken try this place:[link=http://www.echo-usa.com/advantage.asp?transaction=search&template=map_search&searchname=Sales+%26+Service&pwidth=400&pheight=700&search1=0&search2=0&address=&city=Greensboro&stateProvince=NC&postalCode=&country=US&radius=100&x=78&y=8]Here[/link]
Once the spring goes I refuse to mess with a part that only costs $20-25. Very frustrating! I am sure at least on of the places in the link will have what you need.

RE: Pull start rope broken
Hey chowderhead, are you saying an Echo brand pull start will mount on these engines? Thanks great to know.
I actually took it apart and fixed it. I figured I didn't have much to loose and was watching the Panthers/Saints football game anyway (Saints fan by birth, Carolina fan (mostly) after transplant - Saints won with a field goal with 0:07 to go).
The coil spring had come off the hub. I unscrewed the washers and after a few tries was able to reseat the spring clip. Afterward I wound it the spring up and then (with my third hand ;-) I got the cord threaded through and tied a knot in it.
Kind of a pain in butt, but worth it for now. I've overshot my quarterly budget on RC by a few bucks and would rather not have had to spend money on a new starter. Now I know how to fix the problem (or know when it's a goner) for the next time.
Thanks for the feedback guys,
Ken
