what is up with the Savage this, savage that.
what is up with the Savage this, savage that.
The Savage is widely known for it's tank-like durability. Everyone is hoping that by scaling up the Savage the dirability will follow. I see some things that are similar to the Savage but the chassis is not a scaled up Savage and that makes me wonder how well it will hold up.

Scaling up from a smaller model is not the same as you have mass to take into consideration and mechanical characteristics of the materials (and physics) used. For example a domestic cat is more nimble and less likely to injure itself compared to a lion (with a fall of the same relative to scale fall. So a scaled up savage with the same materials used will not be the same relative toughness of the smaller scale savages.

i know all about the savage, i have had 1 and 3 t-maxxes, revo, so on, so forth. But i don't believe you can compare a 1/5th scale truck to the truck a savage is, totally different breed. IMO anyways

It doesnt exist yet, it is still in the CAD design process, but it will by the end of 2006. I cant wait that long though.
If you scale up a Savage, yes the weight goes up, but the parts also become bigger, and thicker, meaning the durability goes up with it. I want to see more shots of this Power Racing truck though too.

RE: Power Racing 1/5 MT 4x4 (pictures)
I was one of the guys working at the Power Racing booth at the IHobby show and will be doing a lot of work with the truck. The one pictured is the only one in the world and is a rough prototype that arrived early last week. This as-yet-unnamed 1/5th monster truck was designed with a lot of input from different people. Note that the drivetrain is very similar to a lot of 1/8 buggies...even the diffs are "scaled up". Simple is probably better when you're dealing with an R/C truck this big. Someone complained that it didn't have reverse...ah well, can't make everyone happy.
The chassis is the best of both worlds: there is a 3.5mm main plate, and two side plates that attach the main plate in multiple places to the shock towers to create a solid box structure. Two quarter-scale servos will be included and we're still working on the steering rack. They'll probably be flipped around so that the horns will be facing the inside, toward the center dogbone.
The engine is a CY 27cc unit and is mounted just like a 1/8 buggy...we feel that the benefits of 4WD offset the balance issue. The engine is on the right side because the carburetor would stick out of the box structure if it was mounted the other way...it's not as easy to install as a regular glow engine. The brakes will be mounted on the center bulkhead just like a 1/8th buggy....they were not ready for the show, just like the steering system.
As far as the tires go, they can be mounted on FG rims as well as our own (the hub is the same, but the axle lengths are different). Foams are included. They should be available separately by the end of the year. I designed the tires myself for the factory that made the Raptor ("we need a tread pattern by tomorrow, can you do it?"). RDLogics then assumed the rights to selling that truck under their own name: Wolverine (long story there!) late last year. Power Racing has nothing to do with RD Logics at all. This 1/5th monster truck is being made in Taiwan rather than mainland China at a totally different factory/OEM.
There's lots of little things to work on with this car before we can release it. Obviously we want to make it as durable as possible. There are also a lot of upgrades in the works already, like tuned pipes and carbon fiber parts. And we'll have our own Supercab truck body, different from the FG F150 pictured. I think there's enough clones of that out there already.
And yes, it will be under US$1000 as an RTR with FM radio. Hopefully it will be out by the holidays, but I think early 2006 is a more realistic target date. Don't tell my boss that.
I'll try to check this forum if there's any more questions!
Thanks,
-Cameron

Thanks for the information, Cameron. The truck sounds fantastic..............I still can't believe it! A 4WD 1:5 scale truck with a two-stroke engine, an FM radio/receiver, and the servos, too!
.....................and everything for under $1000.00!!!
[X(] WOW!

Great work on the tires. I will buy a few sets for my stuff. But, it looks like you have alot more work on the mechanical design of this truck. There are way too many sharp angles that will induce stress cracks at this weight. I hope you figure it all out before the Holidays.

This looks better than the belt driven FG 4WD.
Cameron, as for the ballance, what about mounting the engine a bit higher, and then tilt the engine 45 degrees toward the centerline of the truck?

Interesting, I also hope its better quality than the raptor.

I hope they gonna find a retailler in Europe specially in France
gonna be better than to modifiy the LST with a gas engine as the zenoah
I definitively like this truck and with LST's shocks is going to be awesome

I'll certainly be watching this thread for more information!! I've got no doubt this will be on my short list to buy.... now, exactly who is the Australian distributor?

I think you're being a little overly critical. A large scale 4wd for less than $1000.00 is definitely worth a closer look in my book.

RE: Power Racing 1/5 MT 4x4 (pictures)
Honestly, it does look like they have quite a way to go on the design of this truck. A cheap 4wd 1/5 scale does sound good, but still looks to good to be true. If this truck was in this not finished design state even with in the last 6 months that means it should in no way be released any time soon. A manufacturer should take time to do some R&D with the finished design to work the bugs out so that we as customers don't suffer from their rush to production. Power Racing needs to prototype atleast 2 or 3 of these and then abuse them beyond all belief to see what needs to be improved.... If they don't then the truck will flop because the first 2 or 3 generations of it will have some issues that could easily be found and solved with some R&D. The same problem was had with the Power Racing Raptor... They copied a Savage and rushed it to production with out their own R&D so the first 2 or 3 generations were VERY prone to break if I remember correctly.

this is just what i've been waiting for a 1/5 scale truggy. 1/8 scale buggies are the toughest out there and are super easy to work on.
