How can you tell the difference between a Zenoah 23 and a Zenoah 26 other than what is written on the recoil starter. I purchased a Traxxas Monster Buggy used and the starter cover says g260rc1, but I can not find where they ever came with anything other than a g23.
By the way this is a brand new car that had been sitting for a number of years.

you cant tell without looking at the piston bore i think - i dont think there is anything written on them apart from the recoil like you say,but fg have only been using a zen260 for only a year - before that you had to purchase a bore up kit. - all zen260 are 04 engines - these have a red spark plug cap and double sided cooling/flywheel,you can buy zen260 stickers at my lhs so i doubt a car that has been sitting for a number of years has a true 260 fitted unless it has been added within the last 14 month

There should be white sticker on the crankcase with a serial number? and G260 RC1 (is says on mine). On a MB its in front of the backwheel/wishbones on the pull start side.

There have been pre-04 G260 engines.
When you remove the plastic shroud from the cylinder and look at the top of the cylinder you'll see a small hole close to the spark plug thread on 260 cylinders. I don't know what this hole is good for, but it's a sure sign for a 260, 230 cylinders don't have it.

You are right, I found the white sticker and it is a zen230, someone swapped their zen 260 with the broken ratchet in the pull start assembly for the good one on the zen 230.
Its only a $9 part and the selle has agreed to replace. So can that the recoil mechanism on the zen260 will work on the zen 230?

RE: Zenoah g260 id
I have one for yea...I have a Marder Race that I baught over in Holland last year and it had the original G230-RC1 Zenoah engine in it but was suppose to be swapped to the G260. When I got the car back to the hotel I started looking it over. I noticed that on the bottom of the engine there was a white sticker with a G230 on it. I emailed the model shop owner and asked him about it because the sticker on the recoil shroud said G260RC. He said that they did the big bore conversion on the G230 to make it a G260. Is there any other way I can check if my engine is a true G260 engine without disassembling it and checking the bore? Or just pull the fan shoud off and look at the top of the cylinder and see if I see a small hole close to the spark plug thread like chevyman_de mentioned? Thanks!

i think in your case the only way your going to be able to tell is to check the actual bore size by removing the cylinder head as i think the only diference between the two engines is the head and piston everything else is the same - i bought my marder race from rossendales when they 1st came out - it came with a 23cc zen but they put a 26cc bore up kit on for free as other shops across europe were offering 26cc as standard for the same price - but they sent out the 23cc cylinder and piston they had removed along with the 26cc fitted to the car so i knew i hadnt been ripped off

radio_controlled_mad....After I looked into the difference between the G23 and G26 it is only the pistion and head. Both engines use the same case like you said. I bought the MR at Modelbouw Krikke in Groningen Nederland. Ron the shop owner assured me that the 26cc bore up kit was done. I think for peace of mind I want to check it out for myself.

The G23 and (new-style) G26 top ends are fairly easy to tell apart.
The 32mm G23 from the original cast has a stand-off at the bottom to the right of the exhaust port, as seen here:
http://www.davesmotors.com/store/product279.html
(bottom right of the picture)
The 34mm G26 from the newer cast has a smooth, curved cylinder bottom and the stand-off is no longer present:

(bottom left of picture - different angle here )
The new cast for the G26 has been around for more than two years now.
