How do you remove bearings from differential?
I need to replace the 12x22x8mm cartridge bearings on my FG 8485 limited slip differential. These are the bearings that rest in the rear bulkheads.
Has anyone found a low-tech way of removing the bearings? Does it require a bearing/gear puller tool?
I have access to an arbor press here at work to put the new ones on so I *think* I am covered there.
Thanks in advance,
Ken

I dont know if this one works with the diff bearings but its used to pull the wheel bearing so I would think it will work

Thanks for the FG tool information. That is exactly what is needed.
I searched the US dealers, SB Racing and HobbyThek. Every site lists the tool. NOBODY lists a price. Does that mean the tool is not available (temporarily or discontinued)?
Any other options anyone else has tried to pull these bearings.

Hey Hellya,
Where does the tool come from? It does look like it would do the trick.

Strange, those bearings plopped off just by using normal hand pressure, perhaps just wiggling a screwdriver blade slowly using a bit of leverage...not that much force needed to remov em.

depends on who machined the diff casing............ sometimes its a loose fit, somtimes its a snug fit.
Just like with wheel bearings sometimes you can press the bearings in the hubs almost by hand, sometimes you have to use a vise or press

Our bearing puller shown in hellya's posting is only for the 8x22 mm bearings in the uprights. Sorry.

RE: How do you remove bearings from differential?
I guess FG sees the bearing puller tool as low priority. The screen shot rc_mad put up says "New for 2004". Maybe getting cool monster and stadium trucks out the door took priority.
The bearings are on very tight. I tried a half-baked tool made from a piece of some type of metal (don't think it was aluminum) with a notch to allow it to get behind the bearing. I put three holes into it and threaded screws with nuts under the piece to apply "pulling" pressure. The metal piece bent as I threaded the screws through the nuts. The bearing did not budge at all. I might buy that tool from the auto parts store or go to a local machine tool/parts company for advice.
Any further ideas would be appreciated.

RE: How do you remove bearings from differential?
Well it definitely falls into the 'It ain't easy being cheesy' category but I found my bearing puller. I went to Harbor Freight Tools and paid $3 for a battery terminal puller. Its jaws are smaller than other gear pullers so it fits between the space between the bearing and the side of the diff.
The teeth were rounded so it moved around some while pulling the bearing. It also did not have a lot of leverage so it was hard to pull off but after some grunts on my part it worked. Those bearings were definitely not going to accidentally fall off.
The stock Firehammer bearings will not fit so I ordered some new bearings.
Another question for the more knowledgeable members:
Do you use 2RS bearings (rubber shields) or ZZ bearings (metal shields)?
