i was wondering about how many gallons of gas will go trough a 26cc engine, before it needs to be replaced.

properly maintained and good care, i ll say oh 40 or more gallons. when i worked for Cherry Tree Service trimming for power lines. we had 32 cc Stihl Tree saws that would see no less than 3 gallons a week or more thru it. most the time when we needed a new saw, it was becuz it was dropped from a 70 foot tree and hit every limb on the way down. engine still ran Great, but the saw wouldnt cut butter after some of those falls.
i have a WeekWacker here that run twice a week for a tank each week from april to late october. its about 8 yrs old now and still going strong.

Nitro engine $200 bucks and it lasts 4 gallons MAYBE one Summer season, less if you race it.

Gas engine $200 bucks and it lasts YEARS as long as you take care of it.

The guy who recommend a STIHL BR400 blower to me said they used them all day on a landscaping crew for over 10 years. They NEVER did anything to the units except put fuel in them. No plugs, no air filter maintenance.

The blower and weed eater engines are detuned so they should last longer but I'd expect these 23cc and 26cc 'racing' engines to last several years unless not broken in correctly or not heat-cycled correctly. That is what usually gets these engines to sieze up.

The guys at Molzer Mowery Racing (Andrew or Sandy) or fastrat_porting would be able to give you an answer from their long-term experience.

motors tend to last very long, the usual cause of death is dirt digestion. check the air filter often, in very dusty conditions check it more often.

this never gets mentioned on here, but you need to replace your ring every 8 hours run time.

Replace ring every 8 hours, very much doubt that a tank last 45 mins which means you would replace roughly every 10 tanks!
I don`t know much about engines but i very much doubt that.

it depends on whether you want to look after your engine properly or not.
racers replace rings every 6-8 hours to maintain optimum pergformance and to keep the bore cylindrical and to precent ovaling which obviously then leads to low compression.it only costs £3 for a new ring and an hours work.

How big a deal is it to open up the engine? Will the gasket(s) need to be replaced after opening?

What kind of special tool(s) are needed to replace a piston ring? Are there any special techniques/tips needed to replace the piston ring?

you dont need any special tools, but i would get a spare head gasket just incase.just pull the old ring off, you aint goin to use it again!

Carpy is right, 8/10 hours of racing to keep your engine in good order, It's not just a question of wear and tear it's all about being safe and keeping the compression to a maximum, when you're racing with on road cars they go a lot quicker and are flat out for much longer period than off road. Check these photos to see why good air filters are important - www.largescaleoffroad.co.uk click on Stratford and look at the race report and photos. This is one of two "natural" tracks left in the UK, it was very dusty and I changed the pre-filter after every ten minute run.

you try to help people, using info from racers with quite often over 15-20 years experience.
and what happens? you get rubbished by people who think they know about engines but probably havnt ever stripped one down!!
i'm no expert but i listen to those who are...............

On FGdriver.de they have a similar question.

One of the off-road racers says that he replaces the rings every 30 liters.

carpy, ur not getting rubbished, we are all just lazy

personally i dont see the point, as a basher, to replace a ring every 10 tanks.

If your a racer, sure, you want the best performance possible.

Thats a total waste of time and money....we run airplane engines at way higher ratio's 50-100:1 and don't slap a ring in every 8 hours...these things arent nitro burning funny cars for christ sake they are weed wacker engines...I've yet to see Zenoah recommend a ring change every 8 hours as a matter a fact they recommend check/clean at 25 hours then again at 100hours....pretty far off from 8 hours. Considering 8 hours is around 8 tanks of fuel and I've seen some of you claim you run 4-5 tanks for a break in thats not needed either....so enjoy pissing your cash away on that advice

Well said for once badz

I just cant understand why someone would change the ring just after it got broken in.... all i have to say, if you got real good comp and the engine response is like it should etc, then dont mess with it and change rings. Just enjoy it and keep in mind that these are real tuff kickass engines, that when taken care of properly will give you nothing but good performance and many happy hours. Not like those nitro engines that blows up just cause the wind changes

Edit: For a racer it is probably like carpy said, but just as J D wrote.... we are just to lazy
