DISC Brake Upgrade front or rear or both? Mt5 and Baja
My local Hobby shop tells me the FG needs the brakes ASAP becuase the stock ones dont work, why is this?>
Also I hear the HPI Baja stock brakes work great
Now some upgrade to disc all around and some just in the fronts. The HPI Baja kit I see on Ebay looks so cool
Whats the best way to go at this? these things are expensive and I dont want it to stop but I dont want to spend a fortune for overkill if I dont have too
I see alof of these brakes on Ebay used are these worth buying or am I better off new?

FG brakes work fine, and they are pretty much the same as the HPI stock brakes.
both brakes can lock up ur rear wheels. so i dont know why he would say that the FG ones are worse at stopping the car.

The problem is with any of the 1/5 scale models they are big and with a rear brake and a stock dif if you are not going straight, one wheel will lock and the other will turn the other way if cornering, and most of the weight is in the front when braking so if they do lock they just drag the rear tires along for a ride till it can stop. When you get front brakes it allows a faster brake by allowing the weight to push down on the front and gives you more control.
As for cost - Cable brakes ($115.00) will work just fine but, you will need some front upgrades ($80.00)to make them work.

what front upgrades?
i have the FG tuning cable brakes on my marder, they work perfectly when u first put them on u just have to make sure each wheel is braking the same amount otherwsie it will turn u when u brake haha
but if ur getting a bigger engine, pipe ect , in any 1/5th u'll want front brakes.

You must be shopping at Frank's. Patrick knows his stuff. Not too many people are wanting front brakes on the Baja, since they aren't needed. HPI must have done something different to make them work that good.

hellya,
Ya, I got the 6250/3 and found I needed the front 6103/6 upright upgrade for them. Is there another # without upgrading?
USABaja5B,
Not sure what you mean about Franks, but think you are talking to RCManiac954.
On the Brakes my FireHammer stops just as good and way better with the exact same stock brake system as the stock MT brakes. Not sure if its the tire tread, hight, tire size or something else that just pushes the MT even with brakes and tires locked - I'm also talking full throttle, it will stop fine if going slow.
Again, not sure you can even compare these two vehicles.

maybe its tougher on the stock brakes on an MT compared to a baja, because the MT wheels have a larger diameter, so they impart more leverage onto the brakes.
but the stock brakes do the job no probs.
does this guy sell FG and baja? or just the baja.... if he only sells the baja, then its no wonder he will tell u the FG is bad.

Frank's sells whatever people ask for. XTMs for the gassers, and the baja. He stocks spares for the XTM, and hop-ups from all of the aftermarket FG people. He would rather sell FG, since there is more money to make than the FG. But, no one really asks anymore. After selling so many bajas, he doesn't worry about the FG line any more. At least I can get spare parts now in Phoenix.

i would invest in front hydros, i know they can be expensive but its worth it in the long run when we pay as much as we do for our rides. i would recommend k.p desings front hydros with cf disks or hellya has a good setup on his site that are no doubt just as good. its re-assuring to know when you have hydros installed you can pretty much stop in any circumstance.
so go for it and see what you think

The stock brakes on an MT work fine with the truck stock. If you upgrade to a pipe, then I would recommend getting front cable brakes also. Hydros are not necessary, the cable brakes work great on the front.

rcnutshobbies,
have to disagree dude, cable brakes from experience have to be adjusted constantly to bite correctly where as a good set of hydros once installed and dialled in are pretty much maintenance free and guranteed to stop your ride when needed in racing or just street bashin'. hydros are expensive agreed but if you shop about and get the right brand they are a priceless hopup and much needed and all the people i know that have installed them say the same thing. I have had cable brakes but have found over a long period of time you get a much better, improved, sharper brake responce from hydros .

RE: DISC Brake Upgrade front or rear or both? Mt5 and Baja
I have a FG Leopard Race and a friend has the FG Marder Race.
Both of those come with the uprated single disk '97 rear brake, and we both use the standard plastic disc.
We both runs mostly in dirt, and with MT tires.
Both cars brake fine, and can lock the rear wheels on command, both on dirt and tarmac.
My friend uses an HS-645MG and I have a BlueBird BMS660MG servo for rear brake.
I have added Magura Hydro's to the front of my Leo, and braking distance has been reduced to around 1/3 of what it previusly was. This is similar to what I will expect on most any 4 wheeled vehicle, no matter if it is a RC model or a full size car.

What size is the outer diameter of the MT tire?

A string around the tire 25 inches...63.5 cm
Does that mean for every 360* rotation of the tire..... the truck moves 2 ft????

LOL, that's the circumference not the diameter. I am just wondering how much difference in tire size there is, my Baja rear tires are 6 5/8 inches tall(diameter)

RE: DISC Brake Upgrade front or rear or both? Mt5 and Baja
i run my MB Pro with stock brakes, but i replaced the fuel tubing that slides on the end of the rod with nitro tubing as this is softer & has more give, now i have more control & the brakes only lock when i want the to whereas before with the stock tubing they would lock as soon i touched the brake.
in saying this i dont have a tuned pipe, when i get funds for a tuned pipe i will also be getting front cables at same time as the stock brake is prob asking for trouble with the extra power the tuned pipe is gunna give.
