FG, Harm, Bergonzoni, Technokit, are the top 4. Smartech is now making what looks like an FG EVO. not really bad at 500.00 needs a body and radio system. htere are a few ohters too.

Think timmah pretty much covered all the makes 
On a side note, on-raod racing is great (especially 1/6) nope i aint done it, but ive seen a good few vids ..however!! do you have someone to race with or is there a track near by that races 1/6? if so then go for it (i only wish there were a track near me for on-road racing as id give up my MB Pro yesterday!) ,,if you dont have no one to race against or you have no track near by.. then you might get bored very quickly!

As for prices... on road seems more expensive than off road, the FG Evo is pretty much of the line but if your racing competitavely (sp?) then you will prob want the best & any hop-ups etc so it can end up costing you alot! in saying this I would not go out & spend a fortune right away, i would buy a stock model get any *must* hop ups & see how it goes from there
