Broken Baja drive axle
Has this happened to anyone else with a Baja?
P.S.,,,,,This thread will not be a spot for brand "X" RC owners to trash talk. It will be reported if this happens.

I don't think thats abnormal. I have also broken one in my FGMT, I know its not the same brand but, I think brand makes no difference here, its a week spot on these types of outdrives.

RE: Broken Baja drive axle
Remember a drive shaft is something that wears down in time.
When you keep on the gas while landing something like this can occur.
Another possible reason is when the dogbone got jammed while suspension is travelling further. Then this can crack the wheel shaft or the output shaft on the diff.
When it would be a manufacturing failure more people would suffer/report this problem.

if you notice in the second pic, there is no sign of wear on the drive cup so i dont believe it broke from excessive use/wear. i am pretty sure it broke because the pins worked their way out of the dog bone and caused it to bind during the suspension movement.
After seeing what the left side bone looked like, i took the right side off to inspect it but it looks fine.

Hpi will more than likely replace them as long as you don't mention the 29cc or the reed set-up.... That extra torque is definitely what did it. I have an FG, but it took 2 years for the drive cup to split, and only after a few hard landings that day did that happen. I would bet that a stock BAJA drive cup would have no issues over the same time on a stock set-up so I am not bragging on my brand "X" car . On mine I am waiting for Hellya to get in some ball drives, but I don't think you have that option yet.

i understand what you mean about "stock" engine power. but i still cant figure out what caused the pins to back out of the dog bone

Decent ball drives take more abuse than the dogbones, that is is true, but not available as far as I know for the baja.
Just check the pins regulary and you should be fine.

The Firehammers have had this problem too. Duratrax evidently told someone in an e-mail that they needed to solder the pins in on new dogbones before use. Some simply pinched the center on the pin and re-inserted it, while others tried red lock tite. I don't know which worked best, but both will work.
I would try sending those in to HPI as well.

I was told that buy customer support at Duratrash on my 1 month old FH I even bought new drive shafts from tower and I could pull the pins right out with a pliers[X(] and Duratrash thought there wasn't a problem[sm=spinnyeyes.gif] They said I had too solder them befor I used them.......I went too ball drives after that on My 29cckitted FH and on my stocker FH,either way I do not have either anymore

RE: Broken Baja drive axle
Some of the first run Baja's had problems with the pins sliding out because they had the hole oversized. As far as we know those were few and far between. As far as the drive cup goes, broke them one on my Fg and I'm sure I will brake them on my Baja too. I like to fly you know.[sm=tongue_smile.gif]

RE: Broken Baja drive axle
Dog bones only provide a 2 point contact within the output cups, 50/50 stress creating the L shape in the cup or splitting it in 1/2.
Ball drives offer 3 point contact or 33.33% stress at each point, distributing the torque more evenly inside the output cup
Hpi needs to come up with some ball drives............IMO

mine break was almost identical to the first vid, i hit a lame little jump and then it revved to the moon.
mine break was almost identical to the first vid, i hit a lame little jump and then it revved to the moon.
That is how it often goes with a part that brakes down.
Silly - slow - movements and ........ BANG.
What people tend to forget is all the abuse it took before when it held up.
It is just a sum that adds up and at a certain point "the bucket is full and floods" as we say here.
This goes for every car.

RE: Broken Baja drive axle
dont get me wrong my Baja has seen more than its share of WOT landings from as much as eight feet in the air in one of the local gravel pits my buddy and i bash at and it has taken the beatings in stride, No broken A-arms, No blown out shocks, No stripped spur gear. the only things that have really broke was the steering servo which they sent a new one for free and the drive axle which they are sending new dogbones, drive axles, and rubber boots for free. Also Wes confirmed that the pin working its way out of the dog bone is what broke the drive axle.

RE: Broken Baja drive axle
dave, i broke the diff shaft after only one tank of gas on a bone stock motor. It looked like an imperfection in the material the way it snapped. These shafts are hardened and tempered and done in mass production so i think there may be a few with metallurgical imperfections.
