Some crazy steering system
It's still not finished, but I needed to have it partially assembled in order to take some measurements and design the cable ends, so I thought I would take some pictures and see what people think so far. This is a push-pull cable steering system that will be put in motion with a stepper motor. The motor will spin the lead screw and in turn push and pull the cables to each differential. So far I have overcome a bunch of issues, and hopefully it will be operational within a couple of weeks. I think I have about 65 hours into this steering as of yesterday. The first 4 images show the lead screw, positioning nut, cable hardware and tubing, and the last is one of the pivots on the diff.

that looks like its gonna be a pretty bad ***** rock crawler when you get it all done, just out of curiosity, why did you post pix in the giant scale section? with the T-maxx tranny and Clod style axles, wont it be more like 1/8 scale?
anyway its a great idea [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

The wheelbase is more than 20", and the overall length of the body is about 29", so it's a tad large for it's tranny. Closer to 1/6 scale, I believe.
Thanks for the compliment!

Wow, those metal tubings, all aluminum construction and cleanliness are...beautiful! Which CAD software have you designed your parts in and I assume you use a CNC to make everything? And what kind of stepper specs are you looking for...and how would you drive the stepper with an rx?
Amazing job btw!

I don't have access to any CAD software or CNC machinery. All of the work I have done is on a manual Bridgeport Series 1 mill and a Hardinge 6" lathe. The only advantage I have is a DRO on each machine.

i dont understand it

j/k
The motor will turn the lead screw, and when the screw turns in one direction or the other, it pushes and pulls the cables to swing the steering. There is only one cable in the pictures. I haven't finished building it yet, but wanted to get some pictures up here to solicit opinions.
I really appreciate everyone's comments! Thanks!

RE: Some crazy steering system
so are you going to have front and rear steer? and if so will you be using one motor to drive the lead screw to operate front and rear steer at the same time?
