RE: hpi baja or fg marder
that depends what you want out a buggy.
HPI Baha is great, few things are available for it, X-can and jetpro.... comes with 23cc
Fg Marder is great, more than 2 pipes are available. and a load of hop-ups....comes with 26cc Zenoah
also more wheel selections without changing hub's
But Fg Marder will need alloy gear carrier out the box, im not too sure on the baha with immediate upgrades out the box.

RE: hpi baja or fg marder
My opinion the FG Marder is a much better design and better built. As an added bonus its 10mph faster out the box. This is even before a 2 speed transmission, exhaust, engine upgrades etc.... I got a chance to test the HPI and they are really sluggish. If you decide to go with the baja just upgrade to a 26cc at least. You can even drop a 29cc in there but look out tires/wheels. Get ready to install some FG wheels and tires on it if you upgrade the motor... Both cars are really nice, just my opinion I choose FG.

I don't know how you can make a statement like that[:@]Oh wait your an FG dealer that explains it.
The baja is a far superior design compared to the marder or any FG buggy.
My choice is obvious.

i own a marder i have only seen videos of the baja. from what i have seen i think the baja looks like it handles better. plus parts are not cheap for the marder. if i could do it over i would have waited for the baja to come out

RE: hpi baja or fg marder
i was in the same boat you are last spring, after doing 4 months of homework, i choose the Baja, and im glad i did. DDM just released the Dominator for the Baja, as well as for the FG line. HPIs pipe should be along soon. Samba has a pipe for it. as well as another Netherlander has designed a pipe that should be out this summer. TGN has a pipe about to be released for the Baja, just a word from TGN, its not a pipe for the "faint of heart". plenty of pipe options now and coming soon.
the design of the Baja is alot like many HPI Products. Revoluntionary to the scale and very well designed. its easy as heck to work on. and any problems it has are and have been pretty easily fixed. you can throw a little money at it or alot of money at it. depends on how you want to go.
it does have its faults, but imo, they are far less in number, and MUCH less expensive to get past with the Baja compared to the other options.

i got a baja and the thing is great... i can beat the hell out of it and it keeps running.... easy to work on take a couple of clips off and you can get ahold of anything. there are upgrades out there, and the only problem i have had was my steering servo took a dump after a huge jump.

i like tha Marder better as well. like i said before. its a very solid buggy. i beat the crap out of it and the only things ive replaced were the body, some body clips and the plastic gear carrier. the Marder will take a beating!! and its fast!! also enough to do wheelies if tuned right

RE: hpi baja or fg marder
since your in the uk you want to note that the baja is around ÂŁ230 more than the standard marder at ÂŁ630+ not very many hobby stores selling spares off the shelf (apart from hobbytek germany) - for that kind of money your better off buying a marder race and still have change or pay a little extra and buying a fg leoaprd which is far superior to them both

I don't have a Marder but I have a FG leopard... I would highly recommend the Baja for a first time gasser… Replacement parts are cheaper and the thing is just rock solid. It’s been my most dependable car. I’m replacing that crappy brittle wing on my FG with a Baja wing. I shattered the FG wing in a minor roller over in the grass this weekend. “I’m still pissed about that”. Why would you make a wing out of hard plastic, it has no flex so when you crash it breaks?

Since you're in the UK I'd stick with what you can get parts for. FG,Harm, Lauter.., Horman, ect...
I'm not sure why guys say parts are expensive for the FG's. I went out bashing with 2 Baja's and my Leopard Race. One guy broke about $130 worth of parts. Arms are around $30 when FG's are only $13. (CAD prices) I ran mine for 30 miutes solid without re-starting it.
I've broken one wing in the 3 years I've had a FG MT,MB, Marder, and Leopard Race. That was during wintertime.
I do like the Baja but own Canadian Distributor is only 40 minutes away from me and the prices are pretty decent. I tell the guys around here to get a Baja just so more guys get into the scale. If someone wants something different then there are other choices.
Do some research and compare prices, heck you can even get nice used ones in your area!

HI I have both the fg monster beetle and the hpi baja 5 b. I like them both but my fg breaks parts every other tank or so ( diff ring gear & wheel hubs & dog bones, drive cups and the brakes sucks & not so easy to get to so that you can adjust the pads I'm talking about the stock rear brake). My baja 5b has not broke any parts yet. I have put 6 gallons thru it already no gear problems, no dog bone problems, no brake problems they are easy to reach and adjust brake pads, & no wheel hub problems. The only thing that i had to do was buy some new rear tires DDM had them at the lowest price that I've found. My fg is broken again it broken some teeth again on the diff ring gear I'm waiting for the parts to arrive from FG Performance RC.
If you buy an FG make sure you apply for an FG credit card to hop it all up and to keep it repaired tank after tank and after every other tank, but keep in mind FG for a on road car only is a good choice.
