Engine cover on 1/5 engines- seems to prevent cooling??
After looking at the engines on my Baja Buggy and Big Grizzly, I'm wondering why they have those black plastic covers that seem to cover the entire cooling head? It seems that these covers would prevent the heads from adequately cooling the engine. The only area thats exposed is the rear portion of the engine and but dosen't benefit from the direct air flow like the front would, if it were exposed. Since all of the engines come this way, I'll assume that they still cool well enough even covered up like this. Can anyone explain why it wouldn't benefit from more direct airflow? Would it over cool?
Thanks.
Thanks.

The fins on the flywheel force air under the plastic shroud, and around the cylinder. If you put your hand at the exit side of the shroud (the drive side of the engine) while the engine is running, you will feel a great amount of air comeing out. There is much more air flow than a free air would have.
Water cooling works best
Forced air is second
Free air is last.

In my case,
Frosty ice-cold beer works best...[sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Refrigerator-cold beer works second.
Room-temperature beer will do only when no other choices around.
Warm beer ... needless to say... [sm=thumbs_down.gif]

What I want to know is, how do you guys clean out under that plastic piece. I have to take out two screws in the roll cage, take out the spark plug. and take it off.
Is there an easier way? Is there an outer wear for the bottom of the motor to keep grass from getting sucked up into the top?

Get a outerwears pull start cover and the grass under the plastic pies will decrease by 90%.
Over heat? How long do you run your weed eater before it over heats?

they dont overheat, ive used mine for sveral hours in a row, and i mean from noon till dusk nonstop without any problem, these arent like nitro engines, as long as your oil/gas mix is good and well tuned theyll run nonstop.

RE: Engine cover on 1/5 engines- seems to prevent cooling??
Thanks for the information. I just wanted to make sure it was cooling enough.
Also, has anyone had issue with rocks, grass etc being sucked into the opening in the case by the fan? I had a rock get in there that broke a fin on the fan. The small aluminum piece that broke off got wedged between the fan and the case. The motor wouldn't turn until I removed the broken piece. Is there any kind of mesh kit to seal this area? Will the fan be out of balance with this small piece of blade broken off?
Thanks.

The openings on the cast case fan cover half, sucks debri also. Many people get some metal screen, and epoxy it over the openings.

I guess this is what i should do. I wanted to know if there was an outerwear that was made for the openings on the cast case fan cover half.
I took my pull start cover off once and it looked like there was a half an ounce of weed stuffed up in there.

Today however, they sell covers specifically for this reason. It's not nearly as cheap but is a much easier alternative.
DDM sells the covers.

You really don't have to worry about covering the rest of the openings of the engine because that's where the air is expelled.

I use the outerwear cover on the pull start. However, you really need to glue/epoxy some type of screen over the engine case opening. If you don't rocks, etc can get caught in there and damage the fan.
