Piston ring question!

Piston ring question!
Is it right that the gap in the piston ring should be lined up with the groove in the head i think it`s above the carb port.The reason i ask i got hold of a 2nd hand engine and cleaned it and it only seemed to go together easily without forcing it by lining the ring gap up with the head groove.
