Quarter Scale Dragster

The front end is Stainless tube
two sizes TIG welded together
I made the alloy brackets from 8mm plate
I machined 2 x collars to take M6 bolts to hold the C hubs
I used "Nord-lock" washers to hold the C hubs to the tube/sleeves (an aircraft washer - look them up)
C hubs are Tig welded 3mm S/S plate
Steering is S/S tube leftover from the rear axle - machined out at each end to take a 626 bearing (x 4)
King pins are M6 x 65 S/S cap screws
I later made Alloy eccentric camber adj washers
Steering had 3mm plate welded to the tubes (I had to do this LAST to get the Ackermann angle correct)
the drop axle was bent by my mates at Qantas (it's not what you know, it's WHO you know!)
Maybe this helps
P.S the drop axle is pinned with solid brass plugs wit M3 bolts keeping them in the front tubes[8D][8D]

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
I finally have some new photos - taken today
The pipe is clamped to the chassis via a machine spring
the plate is a road sign "no Parking" ( I needed the aluminium!!)
The sponge is packaging foam from Traxxas Revo hop up parts packaging - waste not, want not
the rubber joiner is a heater hose from a Ford Falcon (the only available automotive hose with a flare to 2 sizes)
the inlet manifold is now the radiator hose from a Daihatsu Charade (cut down)
Remember, "necessity is the Mother of all invention"[sm=idea.gif]

G'day,
Is everyone obsessed with FG and HPI baja here???
where are all the custom builders/rock crawl/monstertruck/on road/drag dudes out there???
Are we a dying breed?[X(]
Are we the "Hot Rodders" of the RC world???
Without these people, "envelopes" would not be pushed

If i were you, i would turn in the design to a company for possible manufacturing, or would get some patents and sell it yourself.

If I have some time over the next few weeks, I will machine the disc for my clutch shoes to slide on, put the new clutch in, and try again
Hmmmmm......... [sm=idea.gif]maybe I should build a shatter shield around the clutch ?
It would be nice to keep my eyes in my head, and my fingers on my hands this thing is DANGEROUS!!!![8D]

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
this thing looks sweet, the one thing i would have done is instead of a chainsaw motor go a purpose built 30 cc rc engine, none the less this thing will go like a bat outa hell in a strait line.

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
Hey everyone,
When (not if) my engine blows up, what would be the toughest, most compact/lightweight RC engine of choice to replace my chainsaw engine???
Obviously, I am not running a monster truck/buggy for half an hour, I want MAXIMUM ponies for 10 - 20 seconds.
Lots of low rev punch is desirable, also.
Any thoughts??

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
Well, if weight isnt too much of a problem, try using a small kart engine or a bigger chainsaw engine (like 60+cc). Some of the newer husqvarna and stihl chainsaws canproduce 7hp stock. Since you have a good amount of space to play around with, you might as well stick a bigger engine in there!

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
i would use a 30.5 cc motor and have it ported out to the max!!!!!or you could go buy a high cc chainsaw motor and get some hop ups from these guys[link]http://www.washingtonhotsaws.com[/link]

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
Just spent the last hour reading and looking at your pics Mudgy and i would like to say thankyou, very nice work all round,i love it!
My one comment would be the motor.Personally i'm thinking you'll need an engine with more torque than a 30cc would provide, due the the weight and the drag application! As already said i think a kart motor would be more suited.
Keep up the good work[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
Bigmodman, I tried to look at washington hot saws, but the site seems to be down.
I'll try again in a few days - I'm off to Melbourne again to install some machines [&o]
never mind, it pays the bills
Just wish I had some time to continue on the rail
Anthoop, I have a Yamaha 110 cc Kart engine, it's around 17 HP
but it weighs so much!
even if I cut off allthe fins, add a clutch, etc., etc.
I would have a stretch hummer - not a top fueller.
It tops the scales now at 14kg
I don't want to add any more unnecessary weight
Washington saws just may be the answer to hopping up a light weight industrial engine to race spec - without
adding weight OR costing a bomb!
I'm trying to create a working model here, not the Bluebird

RE: Quarter Scale Dragster
well i thought it was running b/c it worked at mi casa!but ehh o'well they port and polish the motor out big time!if the intake/exhaust port are both at one inch in diameter they will port it out to 2-3-4 inches or as much as possible.they also bore it out to the max to!i think they set them up to run 125 mx pistons in them, but im not to sure!but you can go to [link=http://davesmotors.com]davesmotors.com[/link]and they have some slick and wickedly fast 2 strokes, you can port and bore those yourself!

G'day BadClown,
I just got home from Melbourne - yeh, whatever it gives up (for now)
i just want to be sure it steers, stops, all the right things a car needs to do before I cut SICK on a powerplant
The chassis is the means to an end - tune that in, and it'll take whatever you throw at it, I reckon [8D]

Just another DREAMER. RTR has killed the largescale market.[] If you can't build it cheap don't bother at all. Many have tried this road only to be shot down.[] Quality does count for something just not a high price tag.
