Default About Motor Mods.......

Hi All! I have a few years playing with gas boats and have learned a few things about how to increase horsepower and torque on the motors that power them. However, I am not claiming to be an expert on the subject and still have much to learn. Therefore, I am asking these questions to all of the motor gurus out there. What I wanted to know was what are the optumim timing numbers for a modifed motor weather it be for a road car or a monster truck? Adding a pipe is a given element; but what does one do to get the maximum out of that bolt-on? With the introduction of the copper base gasket, increasing compression and torque has become easy. However, by lowering the cylinder height, how does the lower timing numbers affect the horsepower output where it is needed? What are the timing numbers we should be looking for? Should the transfers be raised to match or exceed the original? What about piston modifications for induction and transfer timings? Any suggestions? I've read a lot about reed induction and how it increses low and mid-range power. What about those who do not or can not afford this mod? Does this put them at a disadvantage even with increased cc's or higher compression/timing in a 26 Zen? It is common knowledge in the boating circles about what mods to do to increase horsepwer and torque but I haven't seen much in the land base area. I understand that water cooling allows for much leadway as far as needle settings go but I have not seen an suggestions on starting points for running any motor be it stock or modified. Perhaps if these numbers were known, then there might be one less motor damaged due to a lean running condition. I am not trying to compete with any engine builders out there nor am I trying to put them out of business. However, I feel that as the hobby grows, so should the knowledge.
