Any way to keep grass out of your engine head?
Hey guys,
I am installing a new engine in my bigfoot right now and was wondering if anyone has come up with a way to keep grass from clogging up the engine head?
Every time I run my truck I have to take the top cover off the engine and remove all the grass that has plugged up the head and it is so much it looks like a rat was in there building a nest.
I do have a outerware on the pullstart already and it still gets in there.

You could get an outer wears cover for the pullstart, this wil all but stop anything but very fine dust from getting in there, since fitting mine I haven't had a blockage and the truck dosen't suffer from overheating. You can also easily remove them and pop them in the washing machine to clean them up

Drive where there is no grass. J/K
I notice a lot of individual grass blades sticking out from between the fins on my motor, too. I don't think that there is any kind of cover that would be heat resistant enough and still allow enough air flow that people can use over the head. The only thing I ever do is clean it with a stiff brush when I notice the build up.
Maybe someone else will have an idea. []

Outwears on the pull start cover, and covering up the hole on the engine block like mentioned before, it keeps out almost everything then....

You guys are missing the problem....he's got an Outerwear on the pull start ......BUT there are holes on the BACK SIDE of the flywheel cover that are often overlooked.

Ok,
I've taken care of the problem and put some screen on the back side of the motor as suggested and I already had an outerwear on the pullstart.
I'll see this weekend if it solves the problem all together.
Thanks,
Randy

I have one also and grass still gets stuck in the head. Like 8000ft said, theres holes behind the flywheel. I been meaning to fix them myself.

Hi,
I used 30 minute epoxy to glue the screen to the housing but I also put 2 screws with washers in the 2 available holes and that held it in place for the glue to set.
I ran it for the first time on the new motor today and no grass in the motor but it piles up under the motor against the screen.
This 28.5 CY motor a great power plant and I think maybe too much for the stock smartech diff as after running just lite running and a few quick full bore blips to start to break the motor in, I am hearing a grinding coming from the back and I checked gear meshes and all is good. Guess I need to pull the diff and check it out.
I just installed a new alloy motor mount and steel pinion with my new motor so now I guess I need to go after an alloy diff and maybe ball drives if I can find some that fit the smartech.
I like the truck but boy these parts are getting expensive.

i wouldnt cover the holes on the inside of the fan. what you need to do is cut the engine cowl off where it starts to curve over and round the clutch side of the motor.basically so its exposing all the side of the cylinder clutch side.just hacksaw it off. almost all racers do this to prevent clogging, it blows the crap straight through.
it also massively increases cooling

I'M CRAP AT POSTING PICS. measure 2.5" from the fan side of the plastic cowl and cut it off! its that simple.i'll have a look around to see if i can find a photo.

yeh i run the outerwears too, but wouldnt cover the inside holes. you never get grass stuck when you cut the plastic cowl down, because theres nowhere for the grass to get stuck, it just blasts straight thru.still trying to find a pic
