Storing engines for the winter
How does everyone store their motors for the winter? They're in on-road cars and the weather here is currently too cold to run. Would after run oil protect them the same as it would a nitro engine or is there something better to use? Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, statred the tear down over the weekend. Gonna take everything apart and pretty much rebuild the whole thing and check to make sure all is 100%. Just don't want to do any damage to the motors by letting them sit for 4 months. They're not cheap.[8D]

RE: Storing engines for the winter
I tore up the steel gears in mine last weekend. I was making a sharp turn and giving it full throttle at the same time and guess what happened......the friggin power lead from the Rx battery came apart from the tab. So, having no control, the servos stayed in the last position and the car was doing wide open donuts. When I finally was able to kill the motor, I saw that two of the three set screws in the pinion came out, the gear slid to the end of the jackshaft and ground the teeth right off itself. Now the battery wire is fixed and the new gears are on the way. I really have to get some good soft tires for that thing. Just will not hook up. And im sure the tempurature is not helping any.

That''s gotta be pretty tough, getting a brand new 5th csale and then BAM, winter!! That's cool though, work out all the bugs now so she's ready to race come spring!
So just spray some WD40 in the cylinder and pull the starter a few times?

Yup... They don't call it Water Displacement Formula 40 for nothing....
Honestly, mine are going in a box and I'm not doing anything to them...

I usually wrap mine in a warm wool blanket and soak it in hot chocolate, (no marshmellows cuz they get stuck in the carb).
Honestly though, I mist mine with WD and seal it up in a plastic bag.

Have you ever raced 5th scale on-road? If not, I'll give you a simple reason why we don't run in anything less than 60deg weather. Traction. 5th scale on-roads require heat in the tires to generate traction, without that, you will get absolutely NO grip. You won't even get a nice controllable drift (which I suppose might be a little fun). Unlike a truck or buggy (which I have and will continue to run over the winter), I don't bring my on-road cars out just to play, that's not why I bought them. We race them. And I would rather not take a chance of ruining either MMR motor as they are not cheap. That's why I asked for opinions on storing them. Trust me, if there was any way possible to run these things in November, I wouldn't be typing this right now!! [8D]

Brimak, you need to think creatively, put some knobby tires on your on-road and make it a rally car
If all you bought it for was fair weather racing, take the winter, strip your car down, clean it, rebuild it, and store it inside. My FGMT stays in my house No way will I leave it outside. Hoodlums and people will walk off with it. the gasoline smell evaporates in a fewdays, and it won't stink up your house... unless you are like me and miss the smell of gas, and fire it up at 2 am just for sheeieets and giggles

My cars stay in the garage, I don't need the smell in the house... I work on all my cars in my basement with the exception of the gas cars, they don't come in ever...

As far as the car coming inside, mine has it's own bed next to mine!!

Ahhhh the joy of living alone and not having anyone to complain about "big stinky toys"
Worst thing I have to worry about is the cats batting parts off the table and into places where I never find them.....(like under the fridge)
My friends complain that I don't have a couch and Cable TV with a coffee table, but I remind them them that my "living room" is set up for MY convienience, not theirs.
THE CAR AND PLANES STAY, SHE GOES :P

RE: Storing engines for the winter
you shouldnt have to spray anything in it . the two stroke takes care of that , just start it up a few times during that long storage so it doesnt go dry

Winter Storage. Who needs winter storage.
Thats the greatest thing about gassers. They can run year round.

RE: Storing engines for the winter
I don't have to worry about storing 2 of mine since I'm shipping the internals to the UK to be stuffed into modded heli blocks...
