Default BELT DRIVE OR CHAIN DRIVE BAJA5B'S

Is it possible if moddified to run a belt drive or chain drive system instead of the stock spur and pinion ? Personally i would like to see a thick strong rubber belt drive system inplace of the spur and pinion

ya..why? it would make changing gear ratio much harder then it already is, since the motor doesnt move.

how many times in a year do you replace your rubber belt drives on your industrial or home electric saws ? i think that a setup like this will run better and can handle more abuse from 7 HP plus engines

And you'd have to reverse rotation somewhere as well...

i most definatly will stand up better for the power, but reversing the rotaion will prove to be not worth it. what about puting some metal gears in. you can pretty much make the drivetrain bullit proof with some meety bones and robinson gears.

It could have been a more efficient design if HPI implemented it in the beginning since the gearbox could have been designed with just 2 gears instead of three so less driveline loss. As it is to make it would you'd have to redesign the gearbox as well.

As soon as belts get wet, they slip...make sure its enclosed or cogged [sm=thumbup.gif] how about a mini tranny and driveline

I saw a China RC maker, they copy HPI Baja and use belt to change into 4WD.

Been thinking the same thing...maybe something like a snowmoble set-up...when the drive pulley increases rpm the spring in the pulley could be replaced with a hard or soft spring making the launch adjustable...similiar to a 8000rpm spring verses a stocker...as far as the reverse rotation issue a 2nd pulley (idler) with another belt to change rotation making gear ratio`s unlimited !!!

I agree with splcrazy I think this would be a smooth ,Lt wt. low mantainance set-up with alot of gear ratio choices.

Just turn the spark plug around upside down, and it will revese the way the motor turns. Belt drive will work perfectly then !

This is a set-up I have on my old mini bike...Almost like a torque converter..as the engine speed increases the pulley closes belt tighten`s and the power is transfered to the rear

FG's released 4x4 Marder uses a belt with teeth on it. Looks pretty beefy. It will be interesting to see some video and reviews on it.
