Default Help! Don't know how to fix this one

One of the bolts for my cyclinder head has stripped out. The bolt unfortunatly was fine but my crankcase is hooped. Do I need a new crankcase or can it be re-threaded? It's the bolt on the side of the flywheel. It almost looks like I can take off the flywheel, use a longer screw with a bolt to hold the cyclinder on? Maybe.

I would check with my local machinist. Although there are no pics to see the actual damage I guess it can be done somehow. These guys can work miracles sometimes. Just be careful on how much he will charge you in case it can be restored. Sometimes it's less expensive to buy a new part than fix the broken one.

Do I use a larger bolt after? (I'm assuming after using a tap & Die set to re-thread, ...I've never used one)

You can also use a Helicoil:

If the existing(broken) threads are M6,you make new threads M8,and then you insert the Helicoil which is M8 outside and M6 on the inside

Yes you step up in bolt size drill and tap it out to the new bolt size....if you never did this before its not that hard.... take your time

An important trick when tapping..twist the tap in a quater of a turn then back it out a half a turn for each progressivly deeper cut, this will clean out the shavings and make a cleaner re-thread. But more importantly it will lessen the chances of the tap breaking off inside the head, (which I can tell you from personal experience not only really sucks but is also imposiable to fix.)

Ya, kinda like hellya's RC school (I don't think there's anything 1/5 he can't help with). Thanks for the info. Off to buy some more tools!

don't know if you've fixed it yet but heli coil kit from lordco or napa works great (yep they carry metric from M3 up), super easy and stronger than the original, I had a stripped case too, helicoiled it and now better than new, also fixed an inlet bolt hole on the head. Tapping out is fine but helicoils are way stronger.
