RE: Nnew 1/5th scale help!!
i agree, my fg baja is real tough and it would be the last thing i'd sell ...my boat would have to go before my fg.(waiting for parts is a pain though, why i bought the rampage, local parts from vancouver hobbies and they're cheap, even the upgrades, compared to others)
I've run with 5b's and they do seem to be a little more fragile than the fg on rougher ground.
maybe check ebay for a good second hand FG first

RE: Nnew 1/5th scale help!!
I went through the FS thread a bit as I was considering them and saw many mentions of quality control problems (loose screws, missing screws) and I forgot the other issues. I just remember reading that so many units had issues that I figure it wasn't worth the trouble.
I also went through the KM Baja thread and it seems like a great, lower priced alternative to the HPI Baja. The wheels seem to be weaker, and likely the rest of the plastic parts, but all parts are compatible with the HPI Baja, so parts are readily available. The engine is said to be the same CY that comes with the HPI. I think my next 1/5 will be the KM Baja.
I'm like you, can't nearly afford any of the brand names and thus are appreciative of the lower priced alternatives available that allow me to get into the 1/5 market. I ended up picking up a DTX Firehammer MT, which just came in a few hours ago. Wow, it looks great! I haven't been able to start anything yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. For the price that Tower's selling them at, they seem to be a great deal considering parts are readily available and support is local (in the US at least). The FH is not as big as the FS clones (32" FS vs. 27" DTX FH), but I actually like the wider (wider by 1"), lower stance and dimensions of the Firehammer MT over the FS. And the Firehammer is the same as a Smartech, which I've read really good things about.
I've read good things about the Rampage too and it's much cheaper on other sites than through Redcat directly. If I had the extra $300, I would've picked up the Rampage, but I don't have that much money. For $300 less, I'm hoping the FH MT is a great truck.
I never even bothered looking much into the FG and MCD because I knew there's no way in hell I'd be able to afford them. Good luck with whatever you purchase.

RE: Nnew 1/5th scale help!!
Welcome to teh 5th scale aspect of RCs. These are a very different beast form 8th scale RCs,
FGs and MCDs are definitely a different tier of RCs than the clones, and since you already have the Duratrax, go ahead and run it and learn from it. If you ever expand your RC budget such that you could one day afford an FG or MCD (warning, these are no less than $1000 USD), then always remember that they are there too.

The km looks cool, but the smartech cars don't have much upgrades for them from what I see!!
I want something that I could upgrade to be really fast!!
And I'm glad you mentioned 4x4, I have one m more question to go 4x4 would it be better to get the MCD or buy the FG and put the 4x4 conversion on it?
any one know which one is better?

I just hit E-bay, but nobody has these parts. Are these widely available yet? (I mean do the distributors and resellers have them in stock yet?)
Also, what grade of aluminum are these made from? And what treatment is the aluminum treated to?

RE: Nnew 1/5th scale help!!
my 2 cents get a redcat rampage MT .....a 4x4 truck that cost 1/2 of the FG
Look at the FG compaired to the rampage 4x4
Alls I added was the rear dom pipe and my spectrum radio system
Look at the FG compaired to the rampage 4x4

Dont automatically assume you will get the same performance out of your KM as you say in that vid. Hellya doesnt skimp when he upgrades his RCs, and I dont think just a pipe upgrade offered him that performance. He probably has more stuff in his engine too.
I hope he will care to share what other upgrades he put in that specific engine
