Crazy enough to work?
As you may (or may not) have noticed, I'm the kinda guy who likes to make things using whatever I have laying around.
Buying something that's already put together has never interested me, and if I do, it's so I can pull it apart and use the components for something else....
So....
Been thinking a lot lately about how to make an RC vehicle with 2 motors.
2-stroke motors of course.....
How abot this.
2 motors side by side.
4 wheels
Split rear axle
No steering on front wheels
1 throttle control for each motor
Kinda like one of those ride on lawnmowers where the front wheels swivel and steers by using the rear wheels.
I suppose it's kind of skid steer.
But only with 2 wheel drive instead of 4 wheel drive like on a Bobcat or mini digger.
(That's not to say i haven't thought of 4 wheel drive too.....)
It obviously wouldn't be something you take to a track and race around with or anything like that....
Just a big bad RC monster....
Hmmmm?

RE: Crazy enough to work?
Forget the wheels and make this thing a real RC put a strait axel up front and mount tracks on it instead of wheels like the old Tyco Fast Traxx or something similar. I have bean wanting to do this for a vary long time but plan to use only one motor. [8D][8D]

RE: Crazy enough to work?
Sounds interesting Although the biggest problem will be the steering. Or do you mean you will be steering it using the power going to the rear wheels individually, like a tank?

RE: Crazy enough to work?
That was to get the idea I know this would be a lot bigger and way more fun
This is what I want to do for the one I planning to build but I don’t have time or work area

Were you gonna make them yourself?

So if you're going forward and want to turn left you'll back off on the throttle for the left motor/wheel.
It would need to have individual brakes on each rear wheel as well.
And...erm.... rather similar motors on both sides, same rpm etc and tuned pretty well exactly the same more or less.
Like I said earlier, it wouldn't be something you take to a race track or anything like that.
It would require a big open space like the beach, or a building site or something.
Would be cool though!
2 m long by 1.5 m wide and twin 2-stroke lawnmower motors, big fat rear wheels.[X(]
Whoa...
You'd turn some heads.
I also had a closer look at [link=http://www.fieroaddiction.com/servo.html]this[/link] page about building those big servos as used on [link=http://www.fieroaddiction.com/buggy.html]the lawnmower buggy[/link] .
Doesn't seem to be THAT complicated really...
I have a mate who's a sparky anyway so I'll get him to have a look at it and see what he reckons....
Well, I'm off to do some more dreaming.
And hope that my wheels turn up soon.
But I doubt I'll see them before easter.......

What were you gonna use for tracks?
Were you gonna make them yourself?

It’s a bit heavy but so far the idea is
2 fan belts for each track
4 pulleys 2 front 2 back spread to desired width
Layer of thick cloth over the belts
Parts of belt across the 2 belts to create tread sandwiching the cloth
Bolt thru all three each side counter sunk with the nut on the outside.....also act as ice cleats
Cover with some sort of rubber glue stuff that will soak into the cloth and stick them all together
Inside bottom of track would have to have a slider I think
Front axel would have to move forward and back for track tension
Anyway that what I have so far, you could build a 6X6 if you wanted to

RE: Crazy enough to work?
Sounds like a plan.
I don't know enough about rubber and the materials you are talking about to know if it's gonna work or not, but I have a picture in my head of what you mean anyway.
Although......if you cover everything with "some sort of glue" won't it make the whole setup go solid?
Indeed coat the exterior tread bits in something to make them harder or possibly even use something other than pieces of belt for it.
Maybe some sort of aluminium profile.
Might wanna check [link=http://www.ericstoffers.com/loves/radio-control/rc-tank/default.asp]this thing[/link] out for some ideas, if you haven't seen it already.
Also check out his other RC car on that same site.
He inspired me to start building [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8418631/tm.htm]my chainsaw car[/link].
Send him an email with any questions and he'll get back to you.
I've been mailing him a lot re the chainsaw car.

RE: Crazy enough to work?
I had a link somewhere (can't find it) a fellow made a tank like RC.
The tracks used were from a Glass plant, or filling plant (brewery, or Coca Cola, etc) and it looked very functional. (I suppose a lot of viewers looked and thought "where the hell did those tracks come from?)
bottle conveyor. Many of these in the past were Stainless steel, but these days more and more are replaced by polymer tracks (doesn't foul the bottle's base, and cheaper)
type in "bottle conveyor" and you will find a few sites flogging 2nd hand ones
I'll have a chat to the engineers in Brisbane & see if there's any old ones headed for the junk pile. I'm sure they are sprocket driven

RE: Crazy enough to work?
That last pic looks very tank track like.
If I go ahead with this though, I'll probably stick to the tyre setup but pinky_d_brain might find this interesting.
Mudgy, I'm sure you would come across so many parts in your job that would be suitable for RC applications?
Skippy didn't make it to the post office yet but will do after easter.
The last week has been crazy here with rain and trying to get work done in between the showers.
Powertools outside + rain = no fun.[]

RE: Crazy enough to work?
That last pic in Mudgy s post yes those are sprocket driven we have them at work. I am not sure if they come in different sizes though, The ones we have are driven by large #80 or #100 chain. Do a search for Roller chain accesories or attachment chain. Should come up with something in the pic. This stuff is pretty pricey though.
