Default Broken pinion screw

I snapped the pinion screw on my Baja 5t in half yesterday. I think I'll be able to get it out with a pair of needle nose, but that's not the problem...I know I've read about this happening before, and what you were suppose to get to keep it from happening again, but I don't remember. Anyone care to remind me what I'm supposed to get to keep this from happening again?

Try this:

http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.88...t.A/id.2427/.f

Also, Turtle Racing has an entire clutch system out that won't break pinion screws:

http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.88...t.A/id.4813/.f

Vertigo Performance is also coming out with an update this month to prevent this from happening any longer.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8406181/tm.htm

So there are at least 3 options there for you!

Also, which clutch carrier are you running, is it the plastic one? What about the clutch bell? Is it stock?

When you have the funds, get yourself a good alloy enclosed clutch carrier (Ramtech, ADA, Vertigo...there are quite a few). Heat dissipation will help your bearings from overheating and you'll eliminate flex. Also, a true non-welded clutch bell is also a plus for a future upgrade (again, Turtle Racing or Vertigo would be a good investment). I would get a good alloy enclosed clutch carrier then slowly upgrade the rest unless you have the funds for the Turtle complete clutch system.

I just ordered myself the Turtle clutch system on Friday. I can't wait until it arrives and I can install it.

This is a common problem and is why I run the Turtle clutch set up. It all so has other advantages as well. Many even running the higher grade screw still break them but I have never heard of any one breaking the one in the Turtle set up.

Exactly. If you break the Turtle system, it is warrantied. If you break the screw, Turtle will replace the bell, screw and pinion. Not bad insurance.

With the Turtle system not only fix the bolt problem but up grade to bigger bearings, have a enclosed clutch, do away with the poor two piece plastic gear shaft bearing holder and more.

I think I'll just order a couple of the HD screws for now. I definitly can't afford the TR clutch system right now, I'm still waitin on a spare $30 so I can order a new dogbone...

Yes the TR system is pricey but if you buy all the things it cures separate it would cost more or as much and not do all the TR system would do like bigger CB bearings. But I do understand.

Those I have talked to some have not had a problem even with high HP engines with the higher grade bolt and others could not keep them from breaking even with stock engines. Being I race I want to decrease the chance of a problem so I went with the Turtle clutch system which covers many other weak areas not just the bolt.

I could not agree more with this statement. A few days ago DDM had the Turtle clutch system on sale for their one day special for $150.00. I kick myself in the butt every day for missing this sale. It was the deal of the year and I missed it.

I get along just fine with my ddm clutch carrier, turtle clutch bell and turtle gear plate, but you know, it is just not the same. Still same old small bolt and small bearings. And for close to the same price.........kick, kick, kick........lol

That's the reason I picked one up. Seems worth it. Nothing wrong though with piecing it together.

Oh yeah! Aside from the advantages already said over and over agin previously of TR, the TR is a total beauty of a piece to mount up on your 5B! It is very appealing on the eyes to look at, a seriously nice piece of bling, but also a 100% improvement function-wise too!

The gear cover hides the whole system though, so it doesn't really matter how it looks.

You can still see a big part of it with the gear cover on! The body covers more then the gear cover but like I said the looks is a small part of the benefits.

I have a 5t though, so you actually can't see it at all on mine.

but even if you cannot see it you have peace of mind knowing you will not have broke bolts, strip spurs do to the plastic 2 piece gear shaft support flexing or dirt getting in to your clutch among others pluses and that in its self looks good.
