cheap semi truck rc conversion?
i have bought a cheap semi trailer toy and plan to make
a homebrew steel chassis and tlt axles making it a 6x4. i only
bought it for the shell really. anyway i have searched and found
night hauler builds and king hauler builds but not much in the way
of custom trucks.
half the problem may be that here in aus there "semi's" in u.k there
"lorrys" i think (still not sure on this) you in the u.s call them tractor trucks?
semi trucks? tractor trailers? i did find some cool builds but not much.
have not many people done this? searching is a nightmare. you type
in truck and anything with truck in the title comes up. short course, stadium
everything besides what i wanted. used half my downloads looking at savages.
heres a pic similar to the thing i got. it said a metre long with the trailer
so she aint small. if i have posted in the wrong spot let me know. its
the only place besides the toy section that is relevant. thanks.
oh i didnt think being a cheap toy that it actually resembles any make of
truck. if you think it looks like something let us know

How big is that toy? I dont think making that into a gasser is feasible, will, not without mounting the gas engine on the trailer and fabricating a u-joint drivetrain to power the truck's driving axles.
I think going nitro will be better for that size, but for the absolute simplicity, going electric will be best.

yes i was thinking electric. i have a couple if nitro motors
sitting here but it will be towing things so i want the torque.
in the ad it said i metre long with the trailer so i dont think
it will be too small.
my plan is to keep the body and paint it and make the truck
chassis out of steel like a crawler and have two driven tlt
axles on the rear and propper leaf spring suspension. i have a two
speed drill gearbox that will probably be going in there too.
when i get it i think i might jus play with it for a bit stock ,because
i have a bad habit of pulling things apart before they even get used.
i just cant find much info on it. i know i can do it i just thought someone
would have already.

LOL, now that is a crawler! (Just needs more up and down flexibility between the segments)
Imagine if you can take the 18wheeler toy and convert it not into a 6X6, but an 18X18!!!!

Speaking of semi trucks and also more in line of our gasser RCs, these are by far my favourites:
MCD 8x8

FG Marders modded and pasted together to make one RC

Another FR twin engine 8x4 puller

Wow those are so cool![8D]
One question though regarding this whole "_x_" business when talking about the amount of wheels that drive.
When a car with 4 wheels is 2 wheel drive it's 2X4
When a car with 4 wheels is 4 wheel drive it's 4X4
So if it has more wheels and all of them drive should it not be [number of wheels that drive] X [number of wheels in total]???
Like 6X6
So if it has 8 wheels and 4 drive will it be....4X8...?[&:]
(Not having a stab at anyone posting in this thread just noticing that people are doing this in different ways.)

You can check out "SEMIJOE" in the Midwest Model trucking forums he did a few real cool 8x8 conversions. Here is a link to his latest creation.

Here is a link to joes gallery there are a few 8x8 conversion pics near the bottom. He is a great guy to talk to and does sell parts necessary for conversions. Also every one of his builds he has documented in the MMT forums so you can look at teh builds of these.

Here is a custom truck i started last year and it sits in my basement awaiting paint to finish it
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_81...tm.htm#8130199
You will notice that the truck you purchased resembles the tamiya truck i am building
Hope this helps!
