Default A new car, little by little

Here is the start of a (eventually) new car in the future.Starting with the drivetrain and motor, have to build the chassi around it.Got the engine and angle grinder from work, these was supposed to not work.Yeah right

Let us call it a gas powered angle grinder for now

I know it does.Hope you dont mind!I am going to mount the angle grinder housing the same way as the clutchbearingplate, with pedestals.Going to work more on the coupler tomorrow, make some threads in it to put the screws in.

The engine you are running is off some sort of lawn equipment or something correct? I have done some repairs on these type of engines and all the ones I have messed with had VERY small and not very good porting compared to the RC engines. Do these engines run very well in a RC vehicle? Do you do a bunch of porting or something?

Lars, I'm quite new on here so I've missed out on a fair bit, I just wanted to ask why you are using the angle grinder as part of the transmission?

Paul - It's a good solid setup for a right-angle transmission, it's fully sealed and it gives good gear reduction.
I did the same thing on my car and it works a treat.
Am working on my second build also with a grinder transmission.

46U - check out my little weedie monster.
I'm not sure of the cc on this - probably around 20.
Everything is still stock on this and I reckon this car weighs around 6 kilos.
No porting no tricky carb no tuned pipe no nothing.
Sure it ain't as zippy as a factory RC but with some trickery this could be quite a fast little car!

Especially this one.

This is going to be another interesting build Lars.
With the grinder head, have you thought about having your axle going through the whole thing? Using the grinder head kinda like a diff centre (no planetary gears though lol). I did this with the landie, its kinda agricultural and not really in a finished state but theres too many things to change to make it a working R/C model

this thing also uses a grinder head for a trans/90 deg...

its a very good idea... its self contained, gear reduction, strong, and cheap.... and as DVP has shown you can upgrade the gears...

So what is the "driveshaft" connected to on that car Troppo, if it doesn't have a motor?

I think you are...
Easily done though with the way I chop and change everything, so you're excused.

I went through about half a dozen grinders before I found one with straight cut gears.
It's a Bosch.
I got another one the other day for the next build as well.

All others I've pulled apart have had the spiral cut ones, and given the direction of rotation of my engines, they need to spin "backwards".

Its not connected to anything at the moment but it was originally going to be connected to an 18 volt cordless drill motor. Never looking for speed but i thought that would give me the torque i`d need. The drive line is usable but the steering is highly agricultural and really wouldnt work for R/C so i`d have to rebuild the whole front end to get it usable. That is still an option after the heat has died down here. Its just too bloody hot in the shed at the moment.
I`ve posted a pic in the landie thread here rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1124932&page=2 i didnt want to hijack this thread

Wow!A lot of posts here!

It is a Stiga weedwacker,it is 27 ccm.The only reason for it being binned was due to a broken return spring in the pull start! The customer got a new one on the warranty.Barely used. The boltholes for both the carb and silencer are the same as on the Zenoah, making the carb and silencer fit.Maybe it will freshen up a bit then. But that is not of concern now!Im just enjoying building it.

Yeah,i have thought about running the axle through it,but then i cant change the gearing if i want to.Going to use bicyclechain,or maybe gears form FG as i did on the Capri. The rotation of the engine is the same as the motor from the anglegrinder had -nice![8D]

D.V.P. ;thanks for the explanation about the anglegrindertransmission in post #8

Here are some pics from todays work.On the gearhousing the mountingholes have the same distance from the center making it easy to turn and making the axel turn in opposite direction, handy if i am going to use chain and sprockets,or gears.Or if i am going to turn the engine 90 degrees and "lay it down".

Cool but just as I thought not real fast unless you do some work to them. I know my yard trimmer does not turn near the RPM my RC engines do. Not knocking the build as it is interesting.

Nah that's cool man.
I think most people who build their own do it for the challenge of trying to create somehting that works rather than something that will be able to compete with a factory build.

I've never even owned an RTR or anything before but always liked building and modifying things.
One morning I was standing in my shed looking at a weedwacker, a wheelbarrow wheel and some steel tubing on the floor.

Cue lightbulb over my head and the idea to put the three together....[sm=idea.gif]

It's been a long road as I had no previous experience with RC at all, and am used to building bigger stuff, and I've learned heaps along the way.
How do you build/replicate something you've never even seen in real life?
(Ok, I've obviously seen RC cars before but never studied them closely)

I would have been happy if that thing had moved along at 10 km/h on its first run, but as it turned out it was capable of doing donuts in the dirt!

Very satisfying and rewarding to see all that hard work pay off.

I work in a building warehouse, selling building materials for house and so on.The store are selling different crap which i benefit from

The car i have built (the Capri) started as nothing.I once saw a car like it in a catalogue, couldnt afford it,so i started building it.I saw the measures,420 mm wide and 535 mm wheelbase.I sticked to that, and 5-6 years later i bought a body for it.And you see how it ended

Hmm,are you a carpenter or something close?I dont quite remember, but i think i read it somewhere in one of your threads

C.Lyra; It is going to be a car yesI want to make another classic/yountimer as the Capri, but i am not quite sure what body to use.I have the option of the NSU TT,Fiat 500/600,Renault Alpine 110(i like this a lot),Alfa Romeo 2000 GTA,Opel Commodore and some other cars. These are not sold in Norway,so have have to go foreign to get them.Have seen some on the mentioned at German eBay.
