The only thing that worries me is that electric motor.....
A beast like this needs to make a bit of noise and blow smoke.
Agreed. We'll get to that on the next build. I've got a great idea for it.

ORIGINAL: C.lyra
Again awesome build.... Do the reservoir on the damper work??
Reservoirs work. It's these shocks. Springs seem to take about 20 pounds to compress an inch.

This whole build is about testing and learning for the second version. I tell everybody, ''you have to build the first one, so you can build the second one''.

Hehe yeah if you've been reading my threads you know that's how I do things as well.

Looks really cool! IMO, I think it would look better with scale sized wheels, but it still looks awesome. All the fabrication looks really nice, what will you be using to power it? And how long have you been working on it?

Front suspension mount. Upper arms are 1/2" narrower per side to allow for some camber rise. Little holes on the front of the suspension mount are for the skid plate when that time comes.

1/8" mild steel plate. Very stiff in small pieces.

may I suggest using 5 watt L.E.D. lights? they would be as bright if not brighter then the 55 watt lights and use next to no power.

Just an idea.

Looked into those, would be cool. It was more the size thing though. I was looking for something physicially larger, and with a LOT of light. UFO landing, kinda light. IF there's dust hanging in the air, I want to see beams of lights blazing out a hundred yards off the little bugger.

Paint, I've got a guy gonna paint the new hood of one of my full size race cars a bright red to match the rest of the car. I was gonna have him whip that body up at the same time for free (although he doesn't know that yet... ...lol...)

It's nice to have good tools. But I have a supportive wife. I don't drink, don't smoke, don't hang out in bars, don't go to the lake, don't own an RV or camper, and I don't fish... I spend spare money on tools. and after 30 years you accumulate some decent tools if you make the effort. In fact, accumulated a new 6" and an 8" grinder today, just for silicon carbide wheels (for non-ferrrous materials). Wife got me a 20" disc grinder for Christmas... I'm a lucky man. *sniff*.

I tell people I have H.D.A.D.D. "High definition attention deficit disorder". I still have trouble staying focused... but when I do, it's REALLY GOOD!

Subframe:

I made this lower sub frame to connect everything to the upper frame. The rear suspension will likely hang off the back of this assembly.

The last pic of this group.... HMMMMM, ideas for next time.

It's not that it's going well, it's I'm spending WAY to much time on it. I think we are about to hit a major wall. I love where the rear end is headed. I think the front arms aren't going to get me the travel I'd like to see. I see a re-do on that, to widen the car to 31". That should get me more travel with a wide tire and still get it through most doorways.

Good find, that's it!! Leave it to the big car specialist to just instantly know where it was. [sm=49_49.gif]

I like 4 others of his bodys, I may pick them up to have when the inspiration hits.

or

The pre-runner has my attention at the moment, along with the Porsche. I've had an idea for a massive pan car for a while with slick gokart tires and a massive 1 or 2 horse electric motor. Porsche would look good on that.

That mocked up idea was using a 110cc engine. It's given me some great ideas. I have about 3 cars in front of it though that I REALLY want to build. [:@] bummer. I'll get to it.

It'll slow down soon enough. It's like framing a garage. The first few days make it look like you're really moving, then 3 months later, you have a garage. ...lol... I REALLY wanted to have it done by this weekend for an event we are going to. But there are some parts I'm waiting on from MCmaster and a few others that are holding things up. Little bits like master link for 25 chain and different sprocket solutions and spring ideas and bearings in the event of a rear swing arm re-do. You have to have a date set or these kinds of things never get done. I'm setting the date for first drive at Feb 13th. 1 month. I think it's a legit date. Might not be powder coated or painted, but done enough to drive and show.

Already, I've ordered some Tone servos, I'm convinced the hitec in it, isn't going to last, so I'm just going to get to planning on that. I have an idea for a servo saver too. Not that it needs it with the Tone, but curioustiy is killing me. I picked up a wiper motor, and I'm gonna mock up a large scale servo with it. That whole concept with the wiper motor intrigues me, a LOT. Was going to work on it last night but ran out of time.

So, in a nutshell, set a date, work to hit it, and talk about it on web forums. Sometimes when a person needs that little push from people that you know are hoping for progress.

There is too much steel....your not going to be able to move that thing at all. Your horsepower to weight ratio is.........oh wait.....that doesn't sound like me?!

Sorry. Felt it had to be said at some point here.

This thing is amazing. Your definitely putting some great ideas into play here. I like the bent a-arms, and the tube design as a whole. I wish I had the know-how to do that type of chassis. And come on, admit it, when it comes to things like this, there is no such thing as WAY TOO MUCH TIME. It's genious at work, and time is your friend. Beautiful work, and keep the pics coming. I am looking forward to seeing more!

You forgot the "power without proper gearing is nothing. it's allabout gearing "

lol jk

I like when home madeprojects have a steady progress, kind of kick my own butt to do some work on mine! What kind of power does your electric engine have ? EDIT:I seeyoumentionned the wattage but I can't really relate this toa ballpark power. I guess we'll see when it runs! What type of batteries will you use to run it ?

Again, very nice work!

Not as heavy as it might appear to be. I make an effort to use appropriate metals and wall thicknesses. Lot of it is pretty thin wall. I'm confident it will be okay, and here's the rationale. They put that 350 watt motor (say 1/2 horsepower) in electric scooters for people to ride. Car will weigh maybe 20-30 pounds more than the scooter would have... but without the rider. Based on that, I think it will work acceptably. Remember, I'm not building this one to jump, fly or go 40mph. It's a proof of idea so I can build the second one better with a bit of experience on my side. I've built a LOT of cars from scratch (although nothing this big) and am good in CAD, solidworks, or NAD, napkin aided design. Lot of NAD on this one, no cad, all flying by the seat of my pants, making parts as the need arises. These kinds of builds evolve, rather than get done. And evolve is more of what I want to happen. The next one is gonna be pretty neat, and it will be geared correctly and maybe made out of more cro-moly than mild steel.

Original thought on batteries, to save weight and keep the speeds low was 2s lipo at around 10,000mAh on a motor that's okay with 24 volts. Then I was thinking 3s lipo to get closer to 12 volts. I've since decided to run a 12volt gel cell that's around 16,000mAh. The gel cell is VERY heavy, but their kind of a bargain in the grand scheme of things. Certainly cheaper than running $500 worth of liPo packs. And it seems somehow more appropriate to run a massive gel cell, kind of like a power wheels would.

The original plan was more along those lines. More like a monster truck with a triangulated 4-link but in a rwd, or 2wd configuration. Then I got this double wishbone hair up my butt and that's how that went. I may still go back to the beam front axle. I like the way the design on the back has gone so far, and now (to me) the front doesn't look right. When I get around to processing the pictures from the last few days, you'll see that the rear is pretty unique and the front doesn't necessarily match the thought process. It's been fun so far.

Steering servo mount:

Had to put some tabs on the front suspension mount to accommodate the big servo. The more I play with the servo and see the size and weight of this thing, the more convinced I am that it's not gonna survive. We'll see. I'm designing a "plan b" into the front end for a Tone servo when and if that happens.
