Front cantilever mounts and arm. I incorporated the curve on the rear shock mount into the front cantilevers. I think it added some appeal and tied in the shape to the rest of the chassis.

On this, 99% TIG, using MIG to do a quick tack where needed, then take it to the bench and TIG it. I prefer TIG, but it's a lot slower to do, and you can't use magnets to hold stuff together like MIG. Makes it a lot harder to do things in a hurry. I love the speed of MIG.

i am just learning to tig. I have a mig as well. I am much better at the mig, but cant get the welds small enough to look good on 1/4 scale RC car frames, so i moved to tig. I bought a miller diversion and have been happy with it.

Yep, perfect example of where TIG shines. Small welds. Perfect example is the ti-rods and pushrods on this project... I welded a 3/16 nut to a tube without deforming the threads. No other way to pull that off. Well, maybe braze... but I bet it would find it's way into the threads, and I wouldn't expect it to hold up.

If you're into quarter scale, you need to learn TIG, metal and aluminum. You could do it with MIG and smaller wire, using more of a stitch technique, still probably get the job done just fine. But you don't get that butter and stack of dimes that we all dig.

yep, thats what i am trying to do. I think my major hangup so far has been that i start the heat out slow and then heat it up to a puddle. I need to just jam it down, get the puddle and let off the pedal as needed. I have been sitting there waaaay too long, but I am progressing. Just need more sit down time. tough to go around corners too, like on tubing.

Yep. Hard to get over that hump of worry. You get all that time into something you don't want to ruin it.

All it takes is time and practice mate, be patient and have faith in yourself.Bobs work is top notch but he`s got the time under his belt.

A perfect TIG-weld is sexI have tried it a bit,but i have used MIG the most.Worked as a welder for a while making hulls(mainly the frames on the sides of the hull making the shape,i only remember the norwegian name )

Front lower suspension arms.

You can see a before and after on what I had to add.

Had to modify the existing lower arms to accommodate the pushrod for the cantilever and incorporate some adjustment. And it's a good thing too, with the curve we put on the cantilever I gained mechanical advantage I didn't want so the lower pushrod mount is all the way out on the arm when I wanted it in the center. It's about .75 further out than I figured, but still good. A thicker spring or one more set of holes on the cantilever arm about .75-1" further up should do it. OR, a 500 pound spring in place of the 400 pound unit. Travel is excellent, the feeling is excellent.

That's a fact, and it takes time. I still consider myself a rookie or "weekend warrior", but I'm over the major hump. But I still learn every single time.

Not everyone has all the skills needed for this type of project, i have a small range of skills i am good at and a heap of things i`m willing to try but i`m not real good at.
Its the knockers (like sherv) that put a lot of people off trying to learn any new skills.
Some people cant weld, some can. Some folks can lay up fibre glass some cant. Dont knock people for having a go, encourage them.
If you cant say something constructive, shut the hell up...........................................

I think he meant it as a compliment, no harm intended. And I like your refference to fiberglass.... MAN, I wish I possessed "ANY" skill in that area. Or with wood. I muddle through it and make it work, I'm sure it's painful to watch... ...lol...

I need to buckle down. This thing needs to be moving before this coming weekend is over (jan-30, 2010). I set a target date (for myself) of feb 5th. I have an RC race I want to unveil it at on the 6th. "Unveil"... probably not the right word. Simple fact is, I want to show it off a little. I've been busting my little hump on this, and I want to drive it.

And more importantly... start the next one, and it will be better, bigger, faster and jump higher. Kinda gives me goosebumps thinking about it. [sm=idea.gif] This project is what leads to the next project. Gotta start somewhere.

it was a compliment. The Turkey poo welds were common thing on a forum i belonged to during the 2000s when I was active in the car modding community. I remember so many 1st gen Eclipse/Talon owners trying to do mods with some of the WORST welding I had EVER seen...

If you can do better work you should offer advice not criticism.

Front suspension buttoned up, and on the ground testing.

I would consider the car a basic "roller". Needs LOT's of things still done. Cage made, body mounted, shocks re-done. front and rear bumpers and nerf bars made. Light bar made, electronics selected and mounted. Lot to do in the next 10 days.

I put the crawler in there for a sense of size. The little crawler is a 1/10th scale 2.2" tire crawler I welded up out of aluminum about 2 years back. been a good little truck, wheelbase is about an inch to long, gets hung more than say a stock Axial would. But I like the look of it with the primer'd fender and LONG rear shocks. That was a fun build as well.

We scratch built a vintage dragster last winter for a buddy of mine. I make a quick cameo in the video at about 47 seconds. ...lol... Maybe turn your speakers down a bit.
