So......is that it?
Only three of us actually built something...?

That's a bit disappointing. []
Disappointing?! Not in the least! I think this was still the greatest idea EVER!!! People are interested in the home builds, as am I. I think that the majority of folks see the long build times and feel it's absolutely impossible to make anything themselves. Which we have proven is not the case. And to be honest, what we have from the 3 of us are 3 VERY different, VERY cool ideas. And all of us will take away ideas from it. Even if it's one little thing. I'm more fascinated by what we all did in a few hours than by what somebody else did in 500 hours or over 2 years.

I'd be willing to bet, looking back, that these quick builds will live on in the threads, and in our hearts as the "funnest" things we all did in a long while. It didn't matter the outcome, just that we tried and it was clever. And it got built fast. Tell me that you don't have about 5-6 NEW great ideas brewing in the back of your minds now. And THAT, is awesome.

Stuff like this is how we get together as a community and problem solve fun ideas. Like the gas springs, that we are all piddling with to make shocks out of. I find that interesting as heck, and want to try and figure it out. Sure, it would probably be cheaper and easier to just buy something... and we could all afford to probably do that. What I think is neat is taking something that's junk, or discarded, or not as intended and making something VERY cool out of it. I find it very satisfying for the soul.

I'd be willing to bet that a few of the builders on here are very similar in our passions. I, for one, can't sleep sometimes because I'm so excited about the problem solving of scratch building something. Or that joy that comes from making something so cool and posting it that hundreds of people give you that virtual pat on the back for a job well done.

I'm impressed we got anything built, but look how fun it turned out. And you 2 guys did a SERIOUSLY great job. Now, unfortunately, we have to pick an overall winner. I think we should make a poll and let the forum regulars decide. But, I'm here to tell ya, both are amazing. Both of you guys kicked some serious butt and thought outside the box. Hundreds of thousands of people could have done what we did... and now, we showed them how. Very cool.

Good job goes out to:

Dirty_Vinylpusher

and
da mad maori

For rising to the occasion!

And now, I also noticed that it really comes down to this, Australia kicked everybody's scratch building arse's....

Great idea but poor turnout, is what I meant.
I really thought that there would be at least 5 or 6 different builds popping up.

New Zealand V Australia
And I'm not Australian either.
Been here for 8 years now but my passport still says I'm Swedish......but born in Iran......and a couple of countries in between so it's anyone's guess as to "what" I am
People ask me where I'm from I usually ask if they want the long or short version.

Usually ends with me saying "I'm me, not a nationality".

well, both of you dudes, says Australia in your location.

Yea, few more would have been cool. BUT, wait until next time. I think you'll find that we inspired some people on this idea. I'm more inspired than ever! we are now the "old school" originators of a "bodge build".

That's true.

I still think that for the next one you/we/whoever should specify a number of items that HAVE to be used.
Like A shovel, Wheels of a lawnmower, 4 empty beer cans.
Stuff like that

Maybe make it less "contest" like too.
Just have a deadline and not worry about a prize.

Dunno.

I am so gonna motorize a shovel.
I've been thinking about it ever since you first mentioned it in the guidelines for this contest.

I just wanted to post and let you guys know how amazingly entertaining this contest was.

All of the builds were great, though I especially liked H O R I    ...it was just too cool for words

Thanks for putting this contest together Bob! Even though I didn't get to build something, I had immense fun watching it. Large scale homebuilts are by far my favorite.

Well I think you should have the batterypack then.
Personally I don't really have any need for it to be honest.....

Maybe if I win I'll send it down to ya.

Oh man... I'm in for a "shovel off". I think people could really "Dig" it.

I'll start a new thread for contest #2.... leave this one for contest 1 from now on.

dc2 man...you have no room to complain.

you spam the large scale section all the time. You post the same kind of vids over and over again of your "AMAZING" over the top beetle. Frankly, im sick and tired of you coming up with some new name for it and tired of seeing your posts. I had your back for a little while but its just getting over the top. The homebuild projects are 10 times more interesting then your beetle that can just wheelie. thats all it can do. you never jump it, you never do anything with it other then show off its power and wheelieing ability. Sounds to me like your overcompensating for something.

I wasnt going to post anything but i had to.

There are probably more posts from you then all the homebuilds combined. So stop it. If you dont like the homebuilds then dont post.

The inginuity and creativity that some of these people have is amazing. It is by far the most interesting topic on RCU.

Couldn't agree with you more. That Beetle is BOOOORING! It just doesn't work as the front wheels never get to steer, and it would be pathetic on a racetrack. But what is even worse is how dc2man keeps shoving it down our throats, yet he has the gall to criticise the content of other threads!

Homebuilds are far more interesting than over-powered naffmobiles driven by blowhards any day....

Go for it mate, even if you only do it for your benefit, whether you get it running or even finish it doesnt matter you will get such a buzz just out of the thought that goes into the build.
Theres a lot of folks in this world that figure dollars will buy them happiness, let me tell you that building it yourself gives you a much bigger buzz

and that's what I hoped would happen. We inspired each other. It's not impossible. Get out to the shop and have some fun! You don't have to build the car from brand-X, build YOUR car.
