    RE: formula offroad jeep build

I've looked at it long enough so it's back on the work stand
I've decided for simplicity and speed to use the IFS front end out of my pig... it's being slaughtered to provide the rest of the parts for this build; front end, shocks and electrics, it's crap on the track and although fun hillclimbing I'm building something a lot lighter and hopefully somewhat better, so RIP rampig.
I started bending and cutting tube for the front and get will it tacked up tomorrow, get the diff in and hopefully the rear 4 link done.

    progress at last

4 link and rear shocks next then servos, tank and rest of the bracing... not sure if I'll be able to straighten the rear vrc that's on the pig so that and the full cage i built may be up for sale to fund a new 5b side vrc pro

the end is in sight...servo and bottom steeing plate radio gear is done so front is finished bar a bit more bracing..so just tank (Scott from Van hobbies has something that might work he's sending me), rear shock mounts and links..need 4 more rod ends and a bit more tube (some thick walled 3/8 for the link bars) and a vrc 5b side propipe pipe to finish it, so  2-3 more weeks i hope to have it ready to go.
I'll get the shocks done and link mounts finished on the frame and axle and finish up the welding while I wait for bits.

i was but once I started trying to plan the layout there was going to be problems with steering links, track bar, 4 link and general bulk of it limiting travel, was going to be too messy.....and this was way quicker it's  tough enough to take the punishment coming it's way having survived a long time on my rampage without issue. my only concern now is the centre rear dogbone failing but luckily hurrax make a super beefy one with 5mm pins that's the same length and ball size, also one in Ti to save weight, I'll grab one in my next order from them.

    RE: formula offroad jeep build

been a while since i've had a chance to work on this but finally got back to finishing this off...the rear links are all done, shocks mounted...the geometry worked out real well so nothing binds and rear driveshaft stays well within the cups, articulation is good so i reckon this is going towork out a treat....just a few more braces to tack on and then weld it up and job done...discovered that the toxyc vrc propipe, with the silencer cut off, fits and tucks in perfectly (upside down and on the opposite side) with the 5b side propipe manifold...so hope by the end of next week to have this running up some hills...

surprisingly enough it's not too heavy right now...4130 chromemoly tubing is not only strong but light too...i'm hoping this will scale in at total 30-32lbs and be stronger than anything you can buy....any weak spots will show up pretty quick after a good tumble down a steep, long hill

had to borrow the flywheel for another motor

That looks cool! Do you reckon you'll need a panhard rod at all?

i was thinking at first i may need a panhard/track rod because wasn't sure if i had enough triangulation angle but it turned out real solid with no sideways movement...
stripped it down and started blobbing on the final welding

eyes were actually directed at myself for robbing parts for other things and not replacing them,i doit often

..as for the track, no wrong way taken...i agree...we do have a (well Scott from Vancouver hobbies) timing/lap counter system but have managed to set it up a couple of times...seems like it gets too complicated after a few beer[X(] when there is only 2-3 of us we don't bother with it.

    @mudgy

blobs the word as my fastglass needs a new rechargable batt so is somewhat slow glass right now and so i get big green spots in my vision and can't see a damn thing, so i turned the wire feed and heat up to goop plenty of weld in the places i cannot see

rear end is finished and 95% of the chassis is done...it'll be finished tonight i reckon

    RE: formula offroad jeep build

at last after starting this 20months ago it's just about ready to hit the hills...just waiting on a th/br servo and toxyc vrc propipe that should be here middle of next week...it'll need some manifold modding but doesn't look like it'll cause any problems.
threw some new alloy parts on as the old ones were sloppy as hell, nice to see hsp have now got their bearing holes nice and snug, even managed to get most of the slop out the front knuckles/chubs.
just weighed it without pipe, batt and servo...shave under 32lbs, the old pig, that was the drive train donor, with fullcage and paddles was 38lb so not too bad.
drive train is smooth as and should be plenty tough enough for the job...other than the diff cups the rampage drive train has proved to be tough as nails, looks like the diff cup issue is a thing of the past now anyhow and i still have an extra sets of ones i modded laying around .

cut my old jeep body up and got it mounted, need to get a sheet or 2 of 080 lexan to do the doors and back end. paint will have to wait,i'll run it first

I'm lookin forward to some video of it's toughness being tested thoroughly.  Too many home build threads never peter out before the money shot.  Glad to see this one got finished.  Impressive build!  Hope it runs and handles great.

so managed to finish everything other than the pipe, hopefully that will be here before next weekend.
going to change out the airfilter to an old pan k&n i have so it'll fit better...i know they're rubbish for off road but with an inner foam from hpi or fg then they work just fine...you can see in the pic how much cack they let in even when nice and dirty on the outside

exhaust arrived yesterday so got busy, toxyc pipe with crypton/pyrad etc manifold
    first cut the silencer off

shortened the header by about 1/4" cut and rotated it by about 25 degrees,

welded on the mount brackets and stinger

final job was to relocate the spring tabs

a perfect fit without too much work and sits in the cage nicely protected, one of the easiest pipe mods i've done
now it's ready to run...hopefully give it a blast later today

here's a quick vid..i tried a new head strap set up for my camera that was crap so out of 20mins i got about 2 where you could actually see the car it seems to work pretty good and nothing broke[8D]...needs the L end tuning better, the laut clutch is coming out and being replaced with a stocker and 9500 spring, and soften the rear shocks up.
for an old 2 bolt 30.5 rp it doesn't do too bad but this is one application where you can not have enough power so OBR will be getting some of my money in short order.
