GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

1 Attachment(s)
Here's my MT guys. It's now a 1/5 scale gasser with a 30.5cc 4 bolt engine (No going back to messy nitro), as it took me 6 months to get it finnished. All the alum 1/5 scale parts are 3mm thick, and are very nicely made (Team Cannon) It took so long, cos I bought the parts bit by bit (Mike Cannon sent me the price list). To cope with the power and the extra weight (truck is heavy). I bought complete cen nemesis front and rear difs, as they have the alum housings (not plastic) and fitted stiffer shock springs too. But for the wheels I couldn't get the GST tires for my wheels, so I bought Team Losi XXL wheels, and tires (not fitted yet though) as they are 7 inch dia. But best of all the truck is still 3-speed with reverse. Plus unlike other gasser MT, parts are cheap, cos most are still GEN GST parts on this truck..

The body for the truck is a redcat rampage MT, as once you remove the rear window (to clear the airfilter), and the side. It fits prefectly, AND you can start it with the body on....

Nice idea, I always wanted to gas my savage, but that pipe is going to strangle that motor, and the trans will die a horrible fragmented death.

Interesting idea.

is there a website for those parts?

I would assume that when and if HPI releases that 1/8th gas motor, there will be a paradigm shift away from nitro.

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

i wouldnt be surprised if staying nitro is cost prohibitive for HPI... at least a new model nitro.

Na I think the gearbox will holed up as the gears are all metal inside , as for the pipe strangling the motor, I don't think so, cos the duratrax firehammer has only a small box muffler, and most other gasser MT have the same as standered, and team4 monster really do their homework (are real experts at converting the trucks), and they have done it with the savage too. Just ask for a price list..

He sells the chassis frames and the rear dogbone (savage too) on eBay, as thats how I got started...

the stock cans are restrictive...throw on a proper tuned pipe and you'll see what savcom was on about...the power you get from a tuned pipe is night and day difference compared to a can, however that said i don't think the drivetrain would like the extra ooomph a pipe will give you..even though the gears may all be steel they are tiny compared to 5th scale stuff, as are the diffs...I'm with savcom on this one, 1/8th scale stuff simply can't handle the weight and torque of a gasser.....let us know how it holds up for you

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

I sure will. But come on guys. Don't be sooo negative about my truck, as the design has been tested by team4monsters. (They made the conversion parts), as I asked them lots of questions, and you've got to admit. It sure did turn out really nice eh??. But I AM sticking with the gen pipe, cos it's alot bigger than most nitro pipes, and I don't do wheel spins , jumping any of that sort. Just driving around.. Oh and just in case the tranny does take a dunk (I dout it though). I do have a spare one, diffs too LOL..

Hey Guys. I talked to Mike cannon and he said that the Gen pipe WON'T strangle the motor, if you remove the inner part of the tune pipe, as he did run his trucks. Thats good news, ( Negative talk here about the conversion though)...

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

the pipe still will not deliver the power of a tuned expansion chamber...it'll give performance similar to a can or x-can which is about 50% less than the engines full potential. here's a good explanation of how it works [link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_chamber[/link]

99% of us here have run nitros in the past so know the difference in part beefiness between 1/8th and 5th..it's pretty substantial, so not being negative just informing you, from our experience with such things, that the drivetrain will be an issue if you expect to bash it like you would a true 1/5 rig. I have seen one of these up close (my buddy has one sit on his shelf, where it's been since he converted it) and had a good inspection...if you're going to just pootle around it'll be fine, give it the beans though and you may have some issues.

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

True but, as I said I don't plan on giving it the beans (as you say). Just in a straight lines, and just normal driving the truck around. But I think the motor will give a bit more performance than using a can (not 100% though with a tuned pipe), cos the pipe is bigger than those cans that come with the motor (I have one)..

Oh have you seen a Gen GST. It is the beefiness 1/8 round, so is the best truck for the conversion. Just look at the cv's 8mm thick and the weight (as a nitro 17 pounds)

are you gonna run it or is it just for show

hooleydog 08-05-2012 05:42 PM

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

I'm gonna run it and do a video too for you all (Just waiting for the charger to arrive, so I can charge up the 6.6v rx lipo). Remember, It all boils down to how you run the truck. Abuse it, and something will fail in the end, as in all r/c trucks. But I don't intend to do that!!!!

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

are the dogbones on this upgraded also ? the motor could destroy them in less than a tank i think , not to mention the diff

hooleydog 08-06-2012 05:07 AM

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

The rear dogbone is a thicker one, as it came with the side frame, as for the front one. It was plastic. But I replaced that with the steel Nemesis 7.7 dogbone

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

Being a former cen nemesis owner i must say there drive line is very beefy way stronger than any 1/8 scale. The drive shafts are very thick and the diff are all metal as well the whole drive line is bigger and thicker than all the 1/8 scale mt on the market. i think he will be fine i would just stay away from doing any tuned pipe just to be safe and Cen even sells hd drive shafts that are even stronger than stock

hooleydog 08-06-2012 01:31 PM

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

hear to that.. The drive line is very beefy cos the truck was heavy to begin with (17 pounds)

savagecommander 08-06-2012 06:12 PM

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..

That engine will make 5x the torque of the nitro counterpart. If the components can take it, that's quite a testament to CEN's drivetrain. VIDEO!

I can't wait to see this go bang or not. Good luck with it and thanks for sharing it with us.
