hi ive just bought a mcd race runner evo 3 comp , ive not run it yet , but please can i have your thoughts and exsperience's with it please ....

Hi there hongnor, the mcd is a nice bit of kit. The key now is to get the right motor for it because of the weight. I would go for a 28.5 trevor simpson engine. If you want more info go to www.mcdrc.com;)

Hi,

First, did you get the newest version? = longer rear damper, alloy servo tray, steel gears at the transmission, new shocks?
If not, I hope you got a good price or try to change it to the new version!

If yes, you only need a good engine of your choice, if you want to participate at official races the biggest engine you are allowed is a 26 zen (at least in Germany).
Put in some good servos and you are ready to go.

Before putting it out in the wild, check the bump stop some had problems with the lower arms because the travel was adjusted longer than the length of the damper.

first of all thanks 2DEEP , i got told it was the newest version , it has rear hingpins instead of ball sockets , longer shocks at the front ,thicker shock shafts and so on .. i wasnt aware/told that there was a different evo3 with the bits you said ..

but ive gone right thro it with locktight etc .. adjusted the top arms ,as they were adjusted differently on each side, with no slack on the drive shafts .. and on the front shocks , the the pistons would have been hitting the top cap , when landing etc , so ive fitted some tube , as a bumpstop etc ..

hi , ive used it all day , crashed ,bashed , rolled , hit posts etc .. its still ok , but i feel it needs more oomph , do you think my esp modified 27.2 zenoha motor will be up to the job , it makes my baja5t shift .. so im thinking of swaping motors , then fitting a race ported head to the standard cy motor...

Ii think you got me wrong.

There is a "NEW" EVO III version out there, this new version has longer rear dampers, these are mounted like the long front dampers with an extra holder made out of alloy see picture

also the Competition has now alloy stock parts, alloy tank support bars ( see above), alloy servo tray and supporting trays, alloy bearing holder, steel gears on the first and second transmission pair, see picture

The new shocks are now more reliable, they removed the feature to set the shock rate without the use of another damper oil, you can now only maintain the shocks from the bottom, picture

If you don't have these features and some more minor things you don't have the newest EVO III
I mean the EVO III is very good in all 3 versions that are out there but if you pay the full price I think you have to get the best EVO III and this is the one with all the alloy stock parts on it.


The tube thing on the shocks is good it will save you some trouble. but there is also a bump stop in the lower wishbones very close to the diff a single screw on each arm with these you can restrict the down travel from the arms to prevent them from over stressing the shocks

Don't put a ported head on a CY engine, almost every professional tuner uses Zenoah engines, that has a reason!
To get more power, get yourself a pipe, best for the MCD RR is the Samba pipe and the RN Magic Bullit pipe. Both are very equal to the power output. But the RN was build and tested for a Zenoah 26 don't use it on bigger engines it won't give you 100%.

The 2009 spec Race Runners have not been released here in the UK yet......since the beginning of november last year the 2008 spec models have been sold at a significantly reduced price. The price of the new 2009 models will be higher, reflecting the upgraded spec.

Don't worry that your Race Runner is not the latest spec - apart from the metals gears (the 23 and 26 teeth ones) and perhaps the new shocks, the other alloy upgrades are not essential for racing or bashing.

One of my Race Runners was originally owned and raced by Ian Oddie (the 2005/6 largescale world champion) and he didn't use any alloy parts (gear carrier plate, servo tray, diff mounts etc) on it. The only upgrades were the metals gears and King Cobra Racing springs on the shocks.

Install one of the red HPI clutch springs and a tuned pipe - I would recommend the Samba one.

If you still want more performance from your existing engine, send it to Ian Oddie and he will converted it to a 4-bolt head 'heli' spec engine that is perfect for 4WD. There are more details at his website - www.oddified.com/services

That's the way I drove mine almost a year.

I didn't want to make him worry about his RR it is definitely a good model.


@dgav407 Do you really think that the new spec RR is not released in the UK? I think the importer wants to sell all the "old" RR's first before offering the new spec model.

thanks for all your help .. ive got the 23/26 gears on there way ,and a few more goodies , but just not sure what gearing to use with the esp 27.2 zen ....

i found out today that the new rr , is almost ready for its first showing .....

Try 30/33 23/26 (that is my favorite gearing for Zen 26 + Mielke) and if it is too slow for you change to 26/23. Have Fun

I understand the UK importer wants to sell as many of the 2008 models they have left before releasing the new 2009 ones. However, if there is a significant price difference between them, I don't see why they don't release the 2009 models for sale now.

Have you seen the new longer wheelbase (535 instead of 510mm) all alloy model?

No, I didn't see it. I'm lucky when I get some new and fresh information from my dealer or mogatech.
If you have a picture or two of it let me now.

We had some price drops in Germany for the sport and the sport plus versions but not for the competition, in fact it is still the same price for the 08 model and for the 09 model at least here in Germany. I wonder why there is no change for the Baja1000 not even mentioned that the Baja will get the same upgrades. It would be nice to see the Baja1000 with the extra long shocks in front and back!!!!

After the toy fair in Nürnberg, Germany there will be more news.
