FG 2 speed gear selection

I need new gears and have a question. I am looking at the FG option parts portion of the catalog and they have gears in sections... as in a first gear is listed with a corresponding second gear. I understand that the pinion and spur gear have to be matched but do the first and second gear combos have to be matched as they are listed in the catalog or can i use a much shorter first and a much taller second from a different category?

RE: FG 2 speed gear selection

For the two speed I have, I personally use the 16T/48T 1st gear and 18T/46T 2nd

But other possiblilities that will work for sure are:
18T/46T 1st, 20T/44T 2nd for a more statium truck kind of gearing
20T/44T 1st, 21 or 22T/42T for mostly on-roading, with some moderately long straights in the track
21 or 22T/42T 1st, 23 or 24T/40T for strictly on roading and lots of long straights
23 or 24T/40T 1st, 26T/38T for all out top speed runs, with a significant sacrifice to acceleration.

I do not know if any other combos of the above gears will work.

It has 24/40...26/38 right now. I want to keep second as is but put a shorter first on, maybe someone else will know if its possible. Thanks for the explained breakdown though.

NP, I just wish I knew more workable combos.

As for the 24/40 & 26/38 combos you have, your RC is geared for those top speed runs!

I have yet to calculaye the gear ratios, but as a guess, I thnk with your 2nd gear, you can easily hit 50MPH.

If someone knows other combos and also has more insight to these gear ratios, please post.

RE: FG 2 speed gear selection

FG does not make a lower gear then the 26/38 combo you have for the 2 speed.
You can get single gear ratios of 28/36 for your car, there is a guy on ebay that sells them for $50, but they seem to be pretty easily broken, there not made well, you can try and boil them to see if that makes them any better.
But they are the fastest gears you will find here in the states that I know of.
Your gear combo seem to be perfect for an on road, why do you wanna change it?
Going to a 42 gear for first would only make you spin out more off the line.

ZX9, I might be able to help even though you have the competitors bike [X(] What kind of FG are you running? I might have some hints for you since you live far away enough. :D

RE: FG 2 speed gear selection

regarding 2 speed selection, you can have any ratio 1st or 2nd gear as long as they add up to 64t , I make 2 speed kits what are highly evolved from my original ones i made. These now come in case hardened steel and hardened anodized aluminium ( which is a lot lighter than steel) the clutch bell pinions are double D broached, meaning you dont need grub screws, The engaging pin is also bigger and hardened . Check this forum and you'll see.http://gotpetrol.net/steel-gears-vf101.html ratios will also depend on the output power and wheel size .
