Default flip v - airfoil wing profile question

i ahve the filip v glider, (NOT the electric).

it says is has a wing profile E193, E387.

whats does that mean? what is taht profile good for? thermals? speed?

thanks!

Default flip v - airfoil wing profile question

after checking in the Profili software, I found that both airfoils are good especially for thermals (Hi lift) and it seems like they do not have hi penetrability.
The Profili software is Hilly recommended for cases like this.
Ohad.

You can download the software here:
http://www.profili2.com/eng/default.htm
Take under consideration that the software does not describe the airfoil (Hi lift or low drag and so), you need to know basic aerodynamics to figure that out by yourself from the airfoil, however it contains a very large database of airfoils for every need.
good luck.

hey again.
i downloaded and ran teh software. it was too complicated for me to understand the airfoils. if you dont mind, can you tell me more about the two aifoils i listed?

i appreciate your help.

I cant tell you much except the fact that they have hi lift (for thermals)and low penetrability, if you check them in the Profili software you can find dozens of similar airfoils.
In your wing there are interpolated wing ribs that changes from E193 at the root to E387 in the end.

Here's what an old NSP catalog had to say about those airfoils (paraphrased):

E193:
Used in many thermal performance gliders. Should have a good sink rate and moderate penetration. Stall characteristics are mild, and it is a forgiving airfoil that is easy to fly at thermal speeds.

E387:
Highly cambered, but thin section that seems to do well at both ends of the lift spectrum. At a high angle of attack and at max coeffienct of lift, the E387 is efficient; the same is true at a fairly low angle of attach. The airfoil seems to have two speeds - fast and slow. Primarily used on hand launch gliders because of its ability to climb well from luanch and then transition to a slow, floating glide.

I don't think you can anymore. NSP now has an online catalog (http://www.nesail.com), but I think they stopped publishing the paper catalog a few years ago.
