Default RE: spoilers or air brakes

Glide path control for escape from big thermals and for landing help.
For the floaters, the lift killing character of spoilers could be very helpful
in getting out of a booming thermal. Some automatic or manually applied
elevator compensation helps keep the plane flying level. When spoilers are deployed
it will have a tendency to dive, due to the loss of lift and the increase in
drag. Spoilers help shorten the landing distance.
On planes with flaps, the flaps increase wing lift but also increase wing
drag leading to a breaking effect that allows the plane, especially a heavier
wing loaded plane, to fly more slowly than it would do otherwise and to slow down
for landing. When the flaps are applied and wing lift is increased the nose of
the plane will tend to pop us, so again elevator compensation is used to keep
the plane level.
For planes with ailerons and flaps, if you move ailerons up and flaps down,
that is called Crow or butterfly and will likewise slow a plane and help to kill
the lift of the wing. This is, in effect, a combination of flaps and spoilers
in the form of aileron/spoilerons. Also useful method for getting out of
boomers. Here also elevator compensation comes in handy.
They all work! They do different things.

For precision landing, flaps seem to have the edge among contest pilots.

However a RES, Rudder, elevator, spoilergliders can be flown ona simplerradio
and are more forgiving, in my opinion.

Probably would help if you mentioned what kind of radio you want to program.
