Thermal hunting

How to thermal your RC glider, the good old downwind technique.
Instead of flying upwind where you almost fly blindfolded in terms of thermals (Unless there is circling birds or other indications that there is lift) it is much better to have a wind indicator that shows the point where the wind is blowing.
Wait for a small Wind direction change from the normal, and fly to that point.
3 meter Topmodel Diva/Thermic dream at almost 2,8 kg with 2x1800Mha 3 cell battery, and Spektrum DX8 with Vspeak,,,, and TM1000 + altimeter in the glider

What is that annoying voice that keeps interrupting you?

I believe that is a telemetry system with a variometer. The variometer transmits back to the transmitter altitude and rate of climb information. The tones indicate the gliders rate of climb and direction, up or down. The voice announces the altitude.

My aircraft is equipped with telemetry and a $20.00 variometer in the glider that interfaces with the receiver and my $200 FrSky Taranis transmitter and performs the same way. Any number of functions can be supported with the right sensor including GPS location, airspeed, ground speed and various engine parameters. Sensors average about $20.00 each for Frsky radios. All info is transmitted back to the transmitter which can then announce the values in any language you desire, and/or display them on the screen. All announcements can be enabled or disabled at will from any switch you select either individually or all together.

Telemetry is "game changing" technology in the RC world. Once you have it you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

That's cool. I can't do that with my Spektrum DX5 transmitter.

It will need a TX with telemetri and Vspeak sound module + TM 1000 telemetri and altimeter in the glider.

All that technology take the fun out of looking for thermals. I put my plane in the air and actually start to look for thermals. And that is the real joy of it.

People nowadays don't want to bother learning how to fly their planes anymore, they just want to throw it in the air and have it do everything by itself.

Seriously, I wonder why they even bother with transmitters anymore...

You're right, so from now on I will take my thermal glider and try to learn to fly it

Thermal hunting with:
Spektrum DX9 with TM1000 telemetri and variometer gauge.

The glider is a 3 meter Topmodel Diva/Thermic dream at almost 2,8 kg with 2x1800Mha 3 cell battery
