Default Which 100" Sailplane???

Hi,

I am thinking of adding a 100" sailplane to my collection. I want something that is built up as I enjoy the building process. Especially now it is winter....

What do people think of a Flair Albatross?? I fly from a slope and there tends be a quite a bit of wind so I need some penetration. I want the air brakes as the landing zone is small. Really, it seems like a choice between, the Sig Riser 100 and the Albatross. i don't fancy the Bird of Time as it has no brakes or spoilers.

Obviously for slope flying I could go for an acrobatic model - but I already have a couple of flying wings, a Chris Foss Phase 6 and PMP Bedlam. Really I am looking for a largish bird for the pleasure of building it and relaxing soaring - I enjoy my gentle lady.

Any suggestions, or comments on the planes mentioned??

Have you looked at the Great Planes Spirit 100. IMHO, it is a great 100" bird. I have built 7 of these, everything from just rudder and elevator to a full house sailplane. I have built them with and without the polyhedral in the wings and all of them have flown fantastic. I am going to build another this winter. They are a joy to build and a blast to fly. Check one out, I think you will like it.

Why not put brakes in the BOT? I did about 20 years ago!

Satinet,
This site has some VERY cool sailplane kits. I built the XL Big Bird in the nostalgic area. He has many models and I searched his site and looked at everything.
http://www.skybench.com/
Ray Hayes owns the company and I met him at a meet at the AMA headquarters. He took time out to show me a wing attachment idea when I ask him. (He was CD that day and was busy).
The wood in the kit was terriffic. The laser cut wing ribs are stacked with rubber bands holding them together. It was my first kit from him and won't be my last. .. lownslo..
Bob .. in Indy

PS.... Some of his kits, (mine did), had plans for spoilers, or flap options. He also supplied the wood for the spoilers... brakes.

Consider the Gnome. It's a good design, sturdy, and comes in numerous wingspans. It's available on the Internet.
The BOT does have spoilers--you just have to put them in yourself. I don't mean the ARF version, which would be more effort.

skybench.com also has the spoiler equipped 100" Oly II, an outstanding thermal glider with decent penetration, but is more a thermal machine than a sloper....

The Gemini and Gnome are both very good. The former is now being kitted in Germany--I found it with Google--and the Gnome is available in US, again can find it with Google.
I am flying my fourth gemini and have another kit.

I second the Spirit 100 as a friend of mine recomended it to me and it flys great. Depending on where you live finding thermals may give you some trouble but here in the Desert of CA we have more wind than we need. I have been having so much fun soaring that I don't even take my wet fuel planes out of the truck and my little big winch should be here in a few days. This is a great plane that will challange a novice or an expert and the price is right. enjoy wo

Hi Sat

You can't go wrong with the BOT just add the spoilers. The extra wingspan over the 100" birds just puts it in another performance ballpark.

Perhaps a Marauder from MM GlideerTech whci has a more modern airfoil? <http://www.mmglidertech.com/marauder.html>

We sell these in Australia and they have been instrumental in getting guys their 8 hour slope flights in the US.

Cheers
Dave

I've got a couple of old kits of a "Flair Sunrise". It's you basic 100 RES plane. Undercambered wing and all flying tail. I'd still like to get a big bird, but I think i'll get my wife to buy me that for my birthday later in the year.

Add spoilers to a BOT, or track down an old Sagitta 900 kit - even better. The Riser will go backwards any any sort of breeze.

We have a flying site at 38 and Madison for gliders but if wet fuel is your game check out cvrcclub.com as we have a club paved runway that is 600 feet long and covered pits. It is an great place to fly and frendly members. Heck you might see me out there. If you need directions go to Hobbytown USA in Palm Desert and get the info. Happy soaring!
