Question.....
I'm new to sailplanes I've been flying glow planes for a while and want something different. I was thinking of this [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCYT7&P=7]plane[/link] I am on the flats so will I need a high start to get it up in the air or do you just hand launch it.? I found [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE635&P=7]This[/link] on tower also. What is the string and the Parachute for.?

RE: Question.....
If you get the electric plane, you do not need the hi-start. The motor is used to climb the plane to altitude. You then turn the motor off and go thermal hunting. You can usually get at least 3 climb outs from a single battery pack (YMMV). Each climb out will be equal or greater than a hi-start launch.
The hi-start is assembled as follows:
[ul][*] metal stake in the ground[*] rubber tied to stake[*] string tied to end of rubber[*] parachute tied to end of string[*] ring on tip of chute hooked to a tow-hook on the bottom of the glider
[/ul]
- set the whole thing so the stake is directly upwind of the glider.
- take the slack out of the system
- walk 70-90 paces to stretch the whole thing out
- throw plane into the wind.
The string is to give you extra launch height. The chute is so the end of the string will blow back downwind towards the launch point.
Does this help.
