Default Cheap wind speed indicator

I dont normally follow this forum, but ran across a deal thought ya'll might be interested in. Radio Shack is selling an lcd screen wind speed indicator for $15. Tells direction too. The power guys dont normally have much use for that kind of info. I bought one and tested it out the truck window. Seems close enough for me.

rajul,

try this link. http://www.radioshack.com/search.asp...nd+speed&SRC=1

it's a hand help job but for the price it would be helpful. most others i've looked at are $100 +.

Don't forget the Dwyer wind speed meter. Its analog and very sensitive down to 2 mph and up to 50+ mph. No direction, but duh! that's too easy.
I don't think the electronic versions are better than the simple, cheap Dwyer. I bought mine for $15 from an online merchant I can't remember.

Guys, while the wind speed indicator is useful for ground wind speed, the actual wind and thermal conditions experienced by the aircraft might be entirely different at higher altitude. So, is the indicator really useful ?

"IS this indicator usefull?" IN a word NO. It doesn't read below 6MPH, and to some people that feels like a tornado. And when it does indicate 7 MPH or higher you have no idea how accurate that is

Save your money.

Probably not. Of course that didnt occur to me until after I bought it. Just a novelty. Now if it had the ability to log and store the highest speed, that would be useful.

Comparing the Radio Shack with the Kestrel, wind speed was extremely close between the 2 units. As before, it only will measure as high as you can hold it and still read it, but accurate.

Some of us old timers will remember that a number two pencil can be used to log data if used thoughtfully. Be careful though----You could Put Your Eye Out!
