Discus Launch Glider Wannabee
Hi Guys,
I want to get started into DLG, and would like to get your thoughts and opinions on a DLG plane/radio setup. I'd like an ARF, durable and affordable.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Loren

RE: Discus Launch Glider Wannabee
Hi,
Northeast sailplanes (www.nesail.com) has a DLG called the Apache($140) it works perfect. It is an arf and goes together smoothly. I have a Hitec 555 receiver(no case), 4 cirrus 6.2 servos, 4cell nicad 350mah. I have thermalled it out numerous times in the winter up here in the Pac NorthWest..Do some research and you will find that it is half the price of the moulded ships and is just as good.
Hope this helps.

I would go with WrightBros R/C Gambler Low price investment easy to build it is a great intro to DLG. I have one and take it everywhere I can. On a good day I can get about 65-70 foot launches with it. although there is one mod that has to be done and that is to fiberglass the over the balsa V-tail the balsa is not up to the DLG Launches. This is a really nice glider I have dorked the thing a couple of times and have not broke it yet. you can find it at www.wrightbrothersrc.com

Check out the Seeker by Liftworx
http://www.liftworx.com/pages/seeker.html
It breaks down to a 5" x 2.5" x 23" box
42" wingspan
all up weight of 3.5-4 oz.
100+ ft. launches.
Reasonably priced kit at $79.
Never flown one myself, but any DLG that you can take on a day hike by throwing it in your backpack has to be cool!

RE: Discus Launch Glider Wannabee
Speaking of DLG's, I'm in the market for one myself, and I'm stuck on the aileron question...
So...Is it worth getting a DLG with Ailerons (for flaperon/spoileron function)? Or stay simple?
It would be fun to do the occasional loop or roll when there's extra height to waste.
Without ailerons, are DLG's nimble enough to respond to bubbles/turbulence?
If ailerons, I'm looking at nesail's Huron at $109
If no ailerons, I'm looking at liftworx's Seeker at $79 or upslopesoaring's Thistle at $85
Opinions anyone?

If you have a lot of room, you could go without the ailerons. I think the ailerons are good to have and teach you alot about flying. There are even occasions in thermals where you can mix ailerons with opposite rudder. The Hyper DL is good and I have one. I have built a SuperGee WannaBe and it is excellent. I hear the Gambler is good. If you have a slope that has an open field in front, then 12-16 oz. should not be a problem when using both slope and thermals.
I think that if you want to do some spoileron mixing, aileron-rudder mixing, etc then go with one initially. I would steer away from an open bay wing while learning since they tend to be kinda fragile.

Go with the nesail's Apache, they usually have them posted in all the mags for $129.00 ,Arf, ailerons, Minimal hassle of building and good launch height. Don't buy the Huron(same manufacturer as Apache, Valenta models) I saw a guy rip the wing from the saddle mount on the Huron. W/ailerons is way better. Way better!mY 2 cents
